A little snub for the Swans...

In today's Herald, Malcom Knox has this rather hagiographic piece on the SCG, and lists some of the many uses of the ground over the years, including athletics carnivals, fireworks displays, school picnics, cycling, "Highland gatherings", the rugby codes and even the 1934 Empire Games.

Yet there is not one mention of Australian Rules Football, or the 30-year use of the ground by the Swans. I had to read it twice just to make sure, but there's no mention of us. Incredible.

Maybe I'm reading it wrong but the article is a historical one about cricket and those sports are mentioned in the context of the battle between the SCG trust and the NSWCA early in the history of the ground. The Swans came much later so I'm not surprised it wasn't mentioned.

As they are pulling down the Noble and Bradman Stands in March, I wonder how many members have been notified that their seats no longer exist.

You should be surprised. There was an Australian National Football Carnival played at the SCG in 1933, involving teams from NSW, Victoria, QLD, SA and WA, and several matches drew large crowds.

If the Empire Games of 1934 were memorable enough to get a mention in Knox's article, so should Australian Rules Football.

Agreed, In the context of the article that carnival should have been mentioned. Also the first inter-colony contest in 1881 was an Aussie Rules match so that should have been given a run also.

It's not the Swans being snubbed but Australian Football.

The first Australian football match played in Sydney was played there if my history is correct. Australian football was played here and was the main sport before a disagreement on the running of the game between the VFA, the new VFL & NSWFL and both governments. Rugby League broke away from Union & Sydney embraced it in revolt against Victorian arrogance at wanting total control of Australian Football. The other states threatened to boycott a Carnival because of the same beef before the Vics backed down

The ACA history on the 100th SCG Test match included footage of Plugger kicking goal 1300.

And the project included footage of Plugger.......the pig!
