It's not often you see the word Shaw and 'elite kicking' in the same sentence.

An emphasis on skills training during the pre-season has also helped Pyke, who was chuffed to tell SwansTV he finished runner-up behind Rhyce Shaw in an elite kicking test.

Which has set me wondering:
Who's our best set shot (apart from Stuey Dew)? Goodes?
Who's our best at hitting targets? Malceski?

Ryano used to be our best set shot but because of injury lost his way. Nick Mal is certainly a magnificent field kick especially on the run. Spang is a pretty good set shot for goal. As is Goodsie normally. Jude is a top shot for goal. Jack is a pretty good field kick on the run especially. Parker is deadly accurate from a set play in field kicking and in the resies I noticed he was a very good long shot at goal.

I think our kicking is pretty much the worst aspect of our game(centre clearances aside). I think ROK got back some of his kicking mojo late last season. Throughout his career Goodes has missed a terrible lot of easy set shots. I agree on Jack and Parker, but Malceski has dropped off markedly since his injuries and kicks into the man approaching him far too often. I reckon Jude is about our best set shot from his range, which is remarkable because in 2005 to 2008 he was about our worst. If Hanners and Reid could improve their set shots we certainly could improve by 2 or 3 goals a game. Both have pretty poor techniques for mine.

In the backline Shaw has improved as has Ted, but Grundy gives me the shudders every time he runs clear. Improve our kicking 10% and we become a much better and efficient team.

I wish this was about disposal and not just kicking. I think Parker's handball is super and incredibly quick, a bit too quick a few times last year. But when the senior players get used to the lightning fast handball out of a pack it is going to be game on and speedsters away. He is also a great kick. I think for big men both Mummy and Pykie are pretty good in the kicking department.

Totally agree with Nico that kicking is the worst part of our game and totally agree with wolftone that Mummy is one of our shining lights in that department. There were some games in 2011 when our disposal was very disappointing and it seemed to me that only Mummy could hit someone else wearing red and white! As Nico also said, though, a bit of improvement in kicking and we'll be VERY dangerous!

I agree a little improvement and we will be very dangerous. I think if we can get a few games into Lamb & Armstrong we have two guys who are so dangerous with the ball in their hand. They can put the ball on a players chest without a problem. Gary Rohan isn't too bad either & I would rate him a very good kick for goal.

Yep, we were just about last in disposal efficiency last year and that's why the players are spending a lot of time on skills in the off-season. Surely some of it will rub off.

that worked really well we hit the post more than any other side but couldn't kick a goal to save ourselves

Rather depends on what's at stake, Adam still appears to be somewhat "preasure sensitive" when it comes to set shots. Is there anyone here who was actually confident that he'd win the Etiad stadium game against Essendon with the kick after the siren?

By that reasoning we shouldn't be trying to hit targets at training either.

No one at the Swans is a really good kick. If Shaw came first and Pikey second that says it all! We don't have a good kick except Stewart Dew and he is a coach.The last good kick we had was cleared to the Crows.What a delight his kicking was against the Pies regularly clearing the Collingwood press.

Kicking in a kicking drill, and kicking in an actual game are two very different things. Some people are beautiful kicks on the training track but struggle to hit a target in a game. I wouldnt read too much into that.
