It was T.W Wills born Gundagai. One of four that wrote the rules. Some sources say H.C.A Harrison born in Picton also contributed. Both left NSW as infants and both had very tragic but interesting lives.

Demetriou didn't even seem to know what to call it "Derby or Showdown or whatever you like to call it" on the launch. But I agree the T W Wills Cup would be great.

Please... no more cups or names for home & away games. Its purely & simply a Swans vs GWS game. Why do all the states other than Victoria have to have a name attached to their games? I don't mind things like the Marngrook Cup etc. for special rounds but I am so over promoting things that don't really mean anything.

I always like Sam Newmans take on this, anything that they didn't have a cup for was played for "The Fat Rat's Clacker Cup". Because really, who gives a fat rat's clacker?

I'm with baskin. Its like that misdirected promotion that tried to make the faithful take up they Syyyddnnneyyyy chant on cue, without understanding that it was something that happens as a mutual agreement between swanees at certain moments in time, its not something that can be manufactured. So my take is that one day a name may evolve, but let it do just that. Evolve. No amount of "marketing" is going the make any difference to the loyalties, especially in Sydney. a) I don't think we are that stupid, and b) haven't they learned by now that we cannot be led by the nose?

But Victoria do Baskin. The Hawks v Saints game is the 'Trevor Barker' maybe cup and Pies v Bombers on ANZAC Day is the ANZAC CUP. There are several others too that play for some sort of cup. There is an Indigenous Cup also and I think that is played by different sides in the Indigenous Round each year. There are probably more I think there is a Whitten Cup also but I don't know who other than the Bullies play for it.

I understand that Vic clubs play for cups but that is my point. There are so many now that they are beginning to lose their meaning. Also the Vic clubs don't have names for their games against each other, why do we need to have games called derby, clash, etc.? It is just got up for marketing hype. Do you really think giving a name to the Swans vs GWS games is going to make one iota of difference to the way the game is played? Did our rivalry with West Coast have a name?

Yes you are right it is all about hype but if it gets crowds there I don't give a damn if it is. I think the name of our games against the Eagles were 'Hate', 'Vengeance' and 'Revenge'. They were some of the great games of footy over a period of years and you are right they needed no name. But in saying that they do not share a city with us and they are not the only other team in town. Nor do any other club share Sydney with us so it is different. This naming of local or cross town rivalry is not new or a hype device it is as old as footy. The Ad Men have just used it as a tool to get more bums on seats. For instance the rivalry between Port and Norwood in the SANFL was seen as East v West. Essendon v Collingwood the battle of the Working Classes. Collingwood v Carlton the battle between Working Class and Silver Tongues. Melbourne v Carlton the battle of the elites. They all had their names and still do to an extent but yes they are over dramatised by the PR hype.

I'm with Baskin & Primmy, just leave it to evolve. You can't really think they're are gonna be derbys for the next few years, that implies real competition! And while I wish GWS all the best of luck, its going to be a while before they are real competition for Sydney. I am looking forward to having sell out matches, and screaming for Sydney, but lets leave it until then to give it a name, if it needs or deserves one. Anything might happen of the next 10 years, and a better name may present itself or not..
