Not sure if everyone has seen this new graphic foxtel are using in the games they broadcast.

They are saying that the team that wins 3 key stats wins 96.2 % of the time

The key stats :

1: Contested possesion (which we are really good at)
2. Tackling (which we are really good at)
3. Disposal Efficiency (which we are not so good at)


Im pretty sure its been mentioned on here before, but if we can get our disposal efficiency up then we can be really good this year.

I dont have our league ranking in any position but i would be surprised if we are ever beaten in the first 2 catergories, so there is only 1 thing lacking.

Hopefully adding trade-ins like Tony Armstrong will improve disposal efficiency and the rest of the guys can lift as well.

Yes I've seen it. They're trying a "Moneyball" approach to identifying how and why teams win games. Rather than dismiss it, you have to look hard at a stats combination that has a 96% success rate.

No, but if you are going to have a 96 percent chance of winning you would aim at that wouldn't you? I would.

I think that is why it is a combination of stats that is a good predictor, not an individual stat on its own - ie tackle count is a reasonable measure (though not the only one) of pressure applied on the opposition, so long as it is also combined with a high level of contest winning.

On its own that's often true about the tackling stat but presumably that's power of this combination. IN any case it's no surprise these are revelaing stats - they are the three basic elements of footy.

Being a Murdoch company I'm sure they employed their own unique research methods.....

They have used tackles as a winning benchmark for quite some time. In the 90's when I was involved with Auskick and junior footy they used the Alan Jeans Hawthorn sides as an example at coaching seminars and courses.

I am sorry but I can't remember the figure, however, when they had more tackles than a certain number they almost always won. Almost every time they lost was when they were below that number. The number was pretty high. So the Hawthorn formula was simple; your tackles must be above this figure.

I was lucky enough to hear Jeans speak a few times and he confirmed this was their key stat.

Game styles might have changed somewhat since then, but pressure and tackling have gone to another level so it doesn't surprise me that it is still a key stat. They tackle all over the ground now.

Tackling isn't really a Stat meaning you are "on top" of the opposition, more-so being without possession of the footy and the other team having the play, so more tackles doesn't necessary mean you are in control, on the other hand, disposal eff. is a no-brainer along with CPs, in-and-under possession wins! Inside 50s, Disposals per Goal and clearances are the 3 stats I'd look most at in winning matches of footy.

On the other hand, when a team isn't switched on, when it's just "going through the motions" - one of the motions it stops going through first, is tackling.

I'm not suggesting it's not a good stat to be in front of, just that I don't see it as a sure thing 'lead the tackles, win the game'.

Liz summed it up well tho, when the stat is combined with the other stats it has more of a true measure, hence Fox's 'recipe for success'.
