Good post Scott.
Those who get a thrill from getting a thread moved to the sandpit should consider that it leaves little reason for others to visit this forum, so if you like to just talk amongst yourselves, keep it up.Superman still wears Brett Kirk PyjamasComment

A point maybe worthless, from a poster in Moscow, who was a poster here, but has drifted away, for what it is worth.
Moderators;
1) stop running a cliquey board where banter is only allowed by the clique.
2) Stop over moderating by listening to all the "off topic " whingers. (see point 1)
3) allow some discourse, allow some fights. It's a footy site not a glee chat room. (see point 1)
I have no real gripe, it's your board, you can run it as you please. I just wanted to let you have a perspective from someone who would post here/contribute, but chooses not to.
This site is just a very few people without any meaningful banter. Allowed by the moderators to continue for puzzling reasons? Any interesting new posters are hounded (by faceless reporters) or moderated out by over zealous moderators.
Your site, your choice, but it would great to have a truly independent swans board. One where the same people did not want to moderate, on both big footy and any other independent site. one where posters were allowed to actualy Interact as adults, disagree, fight our own battles without the need for mum and dad to hold our hands. Without the need to constantly report namelessly as a coward.
Maybe I'm wrong? probably.Comment

I just noted that a couple of short, light hearted and now considered 'off topic' posts have been deleted from the 'Elbow Cork' thread?
Of course, there is rarely a reference to who thought the banter inappropriate and deleted them, just deleted, do not pass Go, do not collect 200.....
Seriously, is this how we are playing it now? It's come down to no banter?
OK, as Burt say's, your board, run it as u please. Good luck with that...Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment

Some want banter, others don't. Who do we please? How do we please both?
We have a swans chat forum, we have an almost anything goes forum.
New posters are NOT hounded. If you do not follow the rules then you will be pulled up.
There are many new posters on RWO who just fly under the radar as they stick to the topic, and keep the personal stuff out of there posts.
Possibly the reason that it appears that some new posters are hounded is a thing called reputation. People who have been here for years have that already. New posters don't. There are plenty of trouble makers out there so we watch all new posters cautiously.
If you are a member of any of the Swans groups on Facebook. You see the same @@@@ week after week. Name calling, bitching and whining. No body enjoys being on the end of that or reading it about someone else.
People are allowed to interact and disagree but we draw the line at personal sledging. This is something that is across most boards not just this one. We do run a tighter ship than other boards.
As for the people that moderate on Bigfooty and here, that is there choice, I can't force them to change.
The thing about being a mod is you see things from a different perspective. It is sometimes hard to make an objective decision on a post that you think is borderline. Thus the reason we have multiple mods, so we can discuss the issue before reacting to it.
I appreciate your feedback.
We try our best, but it is a job where you are damned if you do, and damned if you don't!!Comment

FWIW I see no evidence of any new direction.
Nor do I think the rules have changed, and frankly I can't understand how anyone with any degree of emotional intelligence could find them repressive.
As for banter: I think Scott was being exceedingly generous by using that term because the word banter contains a suggestion of wit. An ingredient almost completely lacking from some of the pointless, trivial, banal and above all thread clogging drivel that seems to be infesting the site atm.
Some RWOers are posting with such rapidity, and going off topic so quickly it's pretty obvious that they aren't bothering to read through the thread. They're in too much of a hurry to add their 2 cents worth. If only they took the time to ensure their posts were actually worth 2 cents.
At it's best RWO is a diverting way to avoid doing anything productive at work for a little while. A place to exchange ideas and opinions, preferably those which contain original and cogent arguments, with fellow Swans fanatics. The humour and spirited banter was always the frosting on the cake.
At the moment there's more frosting than cake. Not that that's against the rules, I just wonder if it's easier to transgress if you're not thinking too hard about what your posting.Comment

Some good posts there.
The trouble with the banter, is not that it is bad, it has become excessive, nearly every thread goes askew these days.
This thread is a classic example.
So whilst some may perceive the removal of some banter to be extreme. It is a case of people getting fed up.
I banter, and I enjoy it, but I still try to post something relevant.
Although I also have had my banter removed, along with others. Cop it on the chin. Move on.
There is a game coming up on Sunday!!Comment

Gots to have my 2c worth. I have a little personal experience dealing with the uptight, overzealous mods in here, so my opinion counts more than most.
Fact is, the mods do a very good job in a very difficult situation. The problem is not the banter (verbal sparring) or the off-topic posts, but rather the quality and quantity of it - both of which are subjective measures. You don't want NO banter, or NO off topic posts. Equally, you don't want no holds barred stuff. The ideal mix is a little of each - and you can't apply hard and fast rules to that. Therefore, it is often a judgement call. Sometimes it's spot on, and sometimes it's not.
In a previous life, when I was dumb enough to run this place, I was accussed of everything from being too harsh to being too soft to favouring regulars to not giving regulars better treatment... You literally cannot please everyone all the time
The question you have to ask yourself (apart from whether you feel lucky or not), is whether the effort of having to toe the line and follow the board rules is greater than the enjoyment you get out of reading and posting. If yes, then no one is forcing you to participate. If no, then continue as you were.
There's been a couple of attempts of "independent" sites being set up before, and none has lasted as long as RWO. That shows we have a solid community and a dedicated team behind the scenes ensuring that the site continues. If that is outweighed by a misplaced sense of outrage that somehow your human rights are being exploited by being forced to adhere to certain basic posting guidelines... then perhaps you should look for an alternative that better meets your needs.
PS: Scott is a jerk. I almost forgot to mention that.
177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....
