    Mummy's tap work

I would be interested to hear people's thoughts on Mumford's tap work. I first noticed it a couple of years ago in a game (I think) against Melbourne. For someone with such a big body, he looked like he was muscled out of the contest too easily. Admittedly, if it was Melbourne, he was up against one of the best ruckmen in the league at the time in Jamar, but someone else I know mentioned last week that he was beaten to the tap too often.

I understand that winning the tap isn't everything, as we showed against Freo numerous times, and Carlton have shown against us. But what are people's thoughts - is this an area of Mumford's game that he can improve?

I thought it was one of his strengths actually.

Hi Beerman, I'm not overly sure what you mean- he wasn't as dominant as I expect him to be in Round 1, granted- but it's not something I'm too concerned about. He was second in the league last season at average hitouts per game with a mid 30s average. I don't have it in front of me now, but from memory in the record on the weekend they put his hitouts to advantage at a decent enough clip, too.

The only real area I'd like to see him improve (yes, we'd all love ruckmen to kick goals too) is getting a bit more of the pill around the ground, I think he's a pretty decent user of the ball and I'd like to see him offering a link through the middle a bit more frequently. He had 12.5 disposals per game last year, with nearly 8 of those being contested- I'd like to see him get some cheap ones as well.

I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Im quite sure he averaged more hitouts to advantage last year than anyone else in the comp. I think perhaps a poor showing in round 1 has clouded your perception of the big Mummy, he is an excellent tap ruckman IMO. Looking forward to him getting better again this year.

If you're talking purely tap work I think possibly Pykey is our best tap ruckman, but Mummy adds a hell of a lot of physicality at the stoppages and around the ground. I think as Mummy's fitness base improves he will be able to pick up more cheap possessions as his career evolves, but he is one of the game's best bash and crash ruckmen and I wouldn't want him to lose that.

I hope he plays this week though as I shelled out a lot of money for him and Big Cox in my DreamTeam and I want to see him on the park as often as possible! Some goals would be nice too....

Mummy got 54 HO's against GWS. I am not sure how many to advantage but I would say a good few. He was the second best ruckman in the league last year. I don't know what the worry is here!

Thanks everyone. Looks like i was being a bit harsh - I must have just noticed a couple of bad games. The AFL stats are pretty limited - they don't give you hit-outs to advantage or minutes played.

He varies his tapwork all the time, and the boys work well off him. I can't wait to get him back.
