Everitt will almost certainly get the sub vest and clearly the coaches rate his versatility. I reckon Spangher could play the same range of roles as Everitt but none of us knows what his fitness levels are like yet, and they may well want to keep getting more game time into him in the reserves so he can come in and make a strong contribution in the second half of the season. I don't think there is anyone else on our list (who is fit) who offers the versatility that these two provide.

Eski, when fit and firing, is one of the top half dozen offensive players in our squad, IMO. He knows how to find the ball and moves it forward quickly. He played some pretty good football earlier in the season. However, I suspect he is a player whose form tapers off quickly when he is sore, and the ongoing issues he has had with his knees I reckon make him more susceptible than most. I am speculating that this is why he has dropped off over the past few weeks. Notwithstanding that his form hasn't been great, I still think that - right now - he is more likely to contribute to a win than, say Harry. It comes down to when you give inexperienced players games just to start giving them a chance vs maximising the likelihood of winning a particular game. We supporters love seeing young players come in and get their chances, but I don't think Harry has exactly been knocking the door down with his form in the reserves. He has been solid and I think he continues to look like a very good prospect but he is being trialled in different roles.

The reality is that we don't have that much depth right now. We are missing 4 players who would be automatic first team choices, all of our main list draftees from last year are still getting their bodies ready for senior AFL, as is Lamb. Moore, I suspect, has his cards marked and won't get a game this year unless we become desparate (unfair though that might seem). Spangher has a history of injuries so you can understand why they are being cautious. White, Walsh, Heath and Seaby best fit into roles already covered in the senior team. Goodness knows what is going on with Meredith. For all the goals he has kicked, I don't think Morton's tackling and overall work rate has been remotely close to AFL standard, based on what I've seen of him this year. And Harry and Nipper have a total of 3 games senior experience between them and have had fluctuating NEAFL form.

We have lost two tough, in-and-under, smallish players and the reality is we don't currently have ready replacements running around in the twos.
Well said Liz. Exactly what I was trying to say in an earlier post.

I'm very surprised at the amount of vitriol being flung at Malceski, there are people with very short memories as he was playing some very good football earlier in the year. At his best he is one of the most damaging attacking defenders in the league, 2 selections in the AA 40 man-squad is testament to this. From my observations in the last reserves game his kicking improved as the match went on in what were very wet conditions against a reasonable standard of opposition.

The big question is how he will be utilised. Given that the back 6 did a fantastic job last week and there's also the conundrum of how to integrate Armstrong back there as well (assume he won't be the sub - no one has done that role 2 weeks in a row so far), it is a fair assumption that Malceski will be used as a (defensive?) half-forward against the Bombers.

As for Everitt, we had a tall lineup already so another assumption to make would be that he will be used as a midfielder.

Excellent post as usual Liz.....But....I still would of liked to see something new, something bold.......ie Not Mal and Everitt

Well 360 degrees tonight were saying that this is a big match for both teams. Bumbers last week's form and Swans last Melbourne form.

Who will stand up, whose team will reign supreme?

I think without Goodes, the RWO fraternity will be yellin for a lynch mob next week. At least my man Jesse will be OK.

I just might let the tumbleweed go through and head out to SKODA next Saturday afternoon and the $3:90 potato batons for my sorrows to recover from this Saturday night.
Nothing like a good light bulb moment.

I am sure everyone realises that we needed to fill 2 gaps this week arising from injury and suspension. If McGlynn and Parker were available, I suspect there would be no changes.

And, of course if Goodes and Rohan were available, there would be 2 omissions rather than 2 promotions. That would give us something to complain about.

Some expected (i.e emotional) comments here. Mal is back in - judging by Horse's comments on the Swans site, it seems as though they'd like to have played him in the 2s another week but he's the best available in with two unexpected outs. He's (100 games+, can't be under-rated) experienced and adds a genuinely good kicking option to the side. To those who question his disposal: he's in the best 20 odd kicks in the comp, the reason he occasionally butchers it is that other sides put the work into him. He's one of our designated kickers (alongside McVeigh, McGlynn and Jetts). I agree he's fragile defensively as he can bottle it under heavy pressure. He may play higher this week as an outside option to deliver it into our forwards. Reid, TDL and LRT will need good delivery to really put some pressure on the Dons.

Everitt will almost certainly be the sub. Looking at what the coaching staff have said before, they really value Dre's versatility. He can play as a lockdown/rebounding defender, he can add some toe to a wing/outside runner and he definitely can add an extra marking mid-sized option to our fwd line. He has battled as a starting fwd (apart from when Gaz broke his leg v Norf...Dre was very good that day) but you can't argue that he's an exceptional mover and a booming kick when it's given to him on a platter.

You don't have to be a genius to read between the lines in saying that the coaching staff rate this as a massive, high intensity game. One of the first thing Horse says in the selection video is that they picked the ins with an eye to experience - if we were up against a lesser mob, they might have picked Cunningham (see R1 v GWS).

It's game on this week and it'll be close, but I back us to give it a real crack. We need a good output out of LRT and TDL with Benny, Goodesy and Gaz out; goals may be hard to come by. Bird may get Dempsey in a defensive fwd role, Smith will most likely get Alwyn. We will put a runner (Shaw? Bird? Macca? AJ even?) with Stanton and back Joey, Kieren and Jude to nullify Jobe Watson (=gun). Tipping a close one.

If I'm horribly wrong about any of this feel free to call me out on it.

I like the sound of that. I also hope that having TDL in will provide Mal with a more dynamic target to spot up.

Remember the old days? Malceski to Davo > goal Carlton game I think. Best left foot worm burner I'd seen.

Don't mind the Eski coming back.

Strange they replaced McGlynn with Everitt. Would have thought Cunningham, Moore, Morton or Spangher would have got the gig ahead of him.

If the consensus is that apart from the two forced outs , nobody deserves to be dropped from last weeks game then all we are really debating is who will take spots 21 and 22 on the list. If you view it in that way , Malceski is hardly a bad pick 21 and although to a lesser extent , nor is everitt at 22 and I expect that both these guys will have a bigger influence on the game than anyone else so far nominated on this thread.

Lets face it you should only expect around ten disposals form your 21 and 22 player and I would be mighty suprised if these guys get less than this. This is an eight point game and IMO hardly one to experiment in . The main criticism of everitt and malceski is their defensive side which is something that Morton, Gordon and Cunningham offer no more upside and attack wise you would be surpised if any of these guys contributed more than a goal or two.
