    The Quick Ball Up

    From catching a bit of footy so far this round it looks like it might be the new umpire focus item to throw the ball up quickly when there's a bit of a maul around the ball- they've been doing it for a while, but it just seems more pronounced this round (or commentators are pointing it out more!).

    What are your thoughts on this? I don't mind it, like the idea to get it moving- but I do think there need to be some boundaries around it; watching the Giants vs. Tigers game the umpire just threw the ball up quickly right on Richmond's F50 and it ended up in a quick kick almost to the goal square by Richmond; it struck me as a bad situation to throw it up quickly, ignoring the actual ruck contest it just seemed an odd position to do it, it gave a huge advantage to the forward line because the defence had no chance to setup.

      Rohan Connolly wrote a few days ago in The Age that the struggle for possession was going on for too long and that the best solution was not to make new rules but for the umps to step in sooner. I agree with him, and it looks as if they've decided the same. But I think you're right about checking the contest, otherwise it becomes more of a lottery than ever.
      He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

          The only thing I would change is if two players are fighting for tghe ball on the ground and there is a chance the ball can come out and another player dives into the contest to secure the ball then it should be a free kick to the opposing team. This was used at Junior level year ago and they started using it at District Footy level at one stage. It certainly cleared play and the game was better for it, more open, faster and it made players stay on their feet and be competitive.
