    AFL accused of exploiting figures
It would appear the AFL confirmed that the numbers they put forward were vastly inflated, down from 1,644 to 238 (once they were caught out), so it's a bit rich to be calling it anti-AFL propaganda. As much as I love watching the Swans, the AFL spin machine would leave any political party in Australia for dead. I live in Newcastle and in the last few years have seen similar hugely inflated numbers of junior Aussie Rules 'participants' being reported by the AFL compared to the other dominant codes soccer, RL and Rugby Union. There is room for all codes and I'm all for growth of AFL in NSW, but do it with real figures or you risk loosing credibility.

      Looks like you're spot on:

Well said - the AFL have taken a few backwards steps over this schemozzle..... They have lost some credibility because of this and it's a good example of how a number of people won't take this perceived attempted 'invasion' of AFL lying down. League, Rugby and to a lesser extent, Soccer, are all part of the fabric of Sydney and the AFL can't expect to waltz up from Melbourne and expect everybody to drop everything to take up AFL.

At the same time, both of those articles have been written by league journos so they probably are harping on about it a fair bit. My understanding was that soccer was originally planning on moving out anyway, or at least had other fields that could cover their needs?

The plot thickens... this article highlights that a senior Fairfax exec (a very senior one, at that!) is the secretary for the soccer club involved.

A good interview from Tom Harley where he explains the whole thing, it really doesn't sound as sinister as the herald has made it seem.http://media.sky.apac.kitd.com/strea...s/1/YO8hlF.MP3

Really like Tom Harley, but unfortunately Stell that interview does confirm to me the continued and blatant inflation of numbers. Counting AusKick program participants who did it as part of a school program (and could well be playing soccer, RL or even Juniors in AFL in the weekend teams) as Juniors for the sport that is looking to get ground allocations based on those inflated 'registered' numbers, is at the very best Dodgy. If its not sinister, why multiply the the real numbers by a factor of 5? Why not just tell the truth? For me, not a good look.

If you read through all the info I actually don't think it's really that dodgy at all.
