Really interesting post Magic. I was around and following the Swans then but forgot some of that history. In light of AFL's current investment in expansion, it is amazing that the AFL even considered letting the Swans die. And our history since then also shows what a dumb-arse thing it would have been for them to do so.

Yes Jono the NRL clubs have trouble getting fans to the game. But then again the NRL have a culture of watching the games from the club since Fox came in. Many years ago I remember them sitting in the pub listening to the footy on the radio. Now this was a pub in Redfern just around the corner from the Rabitohs ground and they were playing at home. If that was Melbourne and their team was playing at home they would have all been lining up to see the game.
What the AFL & Sydney have been trying to do is change the culture to a participation culture. Sydney fans of all sport are more likely to be passive receivers of the sport rather than participants at any level. Since Sydney Swans were established the Swans & the AFL have tried to get people involved in going to games and eventually getting their kids involved in playing the game. Kids play all types of sport here but after they leave school this seems to diminish.Comment

I'm loving the hating....
I find it funny how over rated they were, and generally are in Melbourne, earlier in the season.
Then after months of insipid performances, all the lemmings jump off.....
Now after a couple of wins, the last being a fluke against the lowly Tigers, and they are all talking them up again.
They are a dud club with a dud team.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

I'm nervous about this game. Carlton still have a lot of quality players in their starting side and are playing for a spot in the eight.
That said, I can't believe we'd let them beat us, it would put a huge hole in our top two boat, given our draw probably an unpluggable hole.
With the soft draw Adelaide have and the whopping % of Hawthorn, I reckon we can only afford to drop one game in the run home to get the coveted two home finals. So losing to Carlton (a team I hate with a passion) is not an "option". Losing just one to Hawthorn, Collingwood or Geelong is allowable but only one.Comment

I despise them more than Collingwood and I never even thought that that was possible. It's very hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who's learning to play violin. That's what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

The Pie's are clear leader in this field IMO. Don't like Magpies.. and most of their supporters! However I can understand what you mean about some of the fanatical fans. (Used to like the Bombers a little, however had a bad bunch of supporters behind us at a recent game. Lowered my like value a lot.. LOL) Guess we all have a team we dislike a little and some we dislike a lot..
Cheers

Yes Collingwood's fans were rabid frothing-at-the-mouth monomaniacs, but they were relatively harmless because their team was a joke (anyone for Colliwobbles?). It was sleezy arrogant Carlton that kept winning premierships and fueling their supporters arrogance (That they pinched our captain and then our coach still rankles).
Unfortunately Collingwood didn't remain a joke, which makes their fans somewhat harder to take. Although I still suspect that Collingwood's transmutation into the leagues most hated team is largely a reflection of the magpie fans zenophobia. Or to put it another way "Everyone hates Collingwood, because Collingwood hates Everyone!"Comment

After reading the article about the near demise of the Swans in 1992, I now understand why I never had any respect for Carlton.
I always thought it was a bloke called Fraser Murphy (not Brown) that led me to hate Carlton. Do you remember him - he was a little forward pocket goalsneak that bobbed up now and then to kick goals at the worst of times, i.e. at the end of quarters. Shoot, I disliked that bloke.
I will be at Etihad on Sunday and hope we kill them.Comment
