Really feel sorry for ratten. Very good bloke, was hard done by injuries this season, no one with that amount of structural injuries can win games. If we had jack, kennedy, teddy, reidy out for alot of our games, im not too sure what position we would be in.

It's Carlton so it's a PMSL from me...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. They have overcome the highly fancied Hawks in brilliant style. Sydney the 2012 Premiers - Gerard Whately ABC

As much as I dislike Carlton, feel sorry for Ratts. Had a 'mare of a year but with injuries and not much depth on the list (which he's partly accountable for) he was going to struggle. His problem was that Carlton gave him everything he wanted in terms of $ and staff - they sided with him in any dispute, like the one with the fitness coach who got binned. After all that, they wouldn't tolerate missing the 4 or 8. Hoped he would stay on.Twitter: @tp_roseComment

We all like bad things happening to Carlton but I do feel a touch sorry for Ratten. A bit unlucky with injuries this year. On the other hand their recruiting hasn't been the smartest. If they hire Malthouse I look forward to being to able to him his team isn't in the top eight, let alone top two.The man who laughs has not yet heard the terrible newsComment

Come to think of it with Ratten at the helm the Blues would continue to be mediocre so on that basis I do feel sorry that he's got the sack...And the Swans are the Premiers...The Ultimate Team...The Ultimate Warriors. I don't know if Malthouse is going to be the instant fix that some assume he will be. His plan will take time to implement, and even then he will need a lot to go his way if they are to come close to winning a flag. That's assuming the game plan he will bring in will be a successful one. I'm not saying it won't be, but it may be a touch optimistic to assume he has all the answers. Still, they have to go after him if he is available. I for one hope he has an absolute shocker of a time at Carlton, and Some other recently retired great coach puts their hand up in the media and says " if you want me Carlton, it has to be next year", and puts the last nail in his coffin. That would be fantastic. Bad luck for Ratten, he got a pretty rough deal. I'll admit though I hated the Way he carried on like a turkey on the sidelines. That's cheer squad behavior, not coach behavior.Comment

I think you will find the same old lines were trotted out in his previous 2 years of coaching. Was it he who stated only a top 4 finish will be good enough this year?
Regardless of excuses the list hasn't improved. No shortage of Carlton supporters saying the list isn't good enough. Ratten is the coach so he takes the rap for talking the list up. Stiff bickies I say.Comment

Ratten took over arguably the most talented list in the country. When I say arguably I mean they thought it the most talented list after they recruited the top draft picks year after year. But let's face it if your recruiting department just looks at raw talent and doesn't bother looking at where they are going to fit into the structure then you get Carlton. They drafted too many ruckmen, mids and forwards and forgot to look at backs. Some of the young forwards turned out to be duds so they changed the backs they had to forwards thinning the already depleted stock of backs even more.
Carlton were expected to play in the GF last year in their development let alone this year. Injuries may have depleted them but their depth is pitiful for a team that had all those top draft picks. Freo is still in the eight even though they have had half the team out for a good part of the season but Carlton are not. Freo have didn't have the early draft picks that Carlton had but if they did I am sure they would have used them better.
In the end Ratten is responsible for the performance of the team on field and due to the team not coming up to expectations he has been sacked. This isn't a new scenario and I don't feel sorry for him at all, he knows the risks of coaching. If you have been around footy for any length of time you know the coach is always the first to get the boot if things go awry. When the new coach comes in then there may be some list changes as well.
Carlton will never win a premiership with this list so the new coach will have to look to the future.Comment

Over the year when pressure has come on I have always thought they should keep Ratten until last week. All teams have ups and downs, but to look at Carlton's performance over the last few weeks the form fluctuations are huge. In a team where the players have a belief in the coach and game plan as well as their individual abilities to compete as part of that game plan this shouldn't happen to this extent. I think instilling these beliefs is a role of the coach and Carlton as a group do not believe. Always a risk to put a club legend in as coach as it can end like this.
If the Swans play a Malthouse coached Carlton next year the players and coach will be super motivated due to the comments Mick the Messiah has been making about Sydney being easy to beat if you understand how. Can't wait to see the expression on his face when his team get smashed and a journalist asks why he could not beat Sydney with their predictable game plan.Comment
