Expectations

Before the season, I hoped we would go one better than last year and make a Preliminary final. I wanted to see us:
- push for top 4 Check
- see the young guys keep coming on so well Check
- See us continue to adapt and develop our game plan Check
- Make a Prelim final hopefully Check
From here onwards it is all almost a bonus in my book. I was shattered after we got knocked out last year, but when it came to renewal time last year, something told me in the back of my mind, I needed to add Premiership Club to my Membership. Still a very tough 4 quarters before I can say that was a good decision, but this team will give it a damn good shake!! And no matter what happens this year, I think this team can only get better from here in 2013!
If we turn up and give our very best for potentially 8 quarters of football, then I don't care what anybody thinks, there is as good a chance as any that it will be a Red and White party at the G! A long way to go yet, but we have already had a wonderful year, and I'm hoping the icing on this cake is very sweet indeed!!

Having followed South Melbourne as a kid and having seen the only 2 appearances in finals in the 70's, I am always hoping we will make the finals, from there everything is a bonus IMO.Does God believe in Atheists?Comment

Every year I expect top 4.
Once top 4 is made, I expect a grand final birth.
Once a grand final birth is made, I expect a premiership.
Anything less is a year wasted. Opportunities like this come about few and far between. We should not be happy if we bomb out this year. It still irks me how blaze Roos and some supporters were about our 2006 grand final loss. As if wining in 2005 made it ok to lose in 2006. Who knows when we will get another chance, we need to take every opportunity as it arises.Comment

And before someone ticks me off for denigration this or that inhabitant of our front half, read on. RWOers began this year pontificating on the mystery of the forward line.
We thought the midfield was settled and has met expectations (the rejuvenation of Jetta is pure cream).
We knew the backline was settled and it's met expectations and contains no new faces.
But the forward line was a mystery then and it's no clearer now: While most people now agree we should play 2 ruckmen, and have 3 talls up forward to provide structure. The question remains which personal should be providing those structural elements?
In March most expected to see Spanky playing as a foil to Reid, but injuries mean he hasn't been sighted. Likewise Reid, Rohan and Goodes have had severely disrupted seasons too. We've tried Jessica, Walsh, 'Drej, Pike, Goodes, LRT as key forwards, and we've experimented with going smaller with Rohan, TDL and now Morton.
Has anyone ever seen as unsettled a forward line on a team two games from a premiership?Comment

In life I am the worlds greatest optimist, in footy I'm the complete opposite.Comment
