Yeah it's one of the questions I've wanted to ask the recruitment staff for a while. Not only did he play for our reserves he was named in the bests on more than one occasion and was easily the most accomplished underage top up I've seen play for the reserves. There was much head scratching here on RWO on rookie draft day that year because I think many of us assumed the club would rookie list him. Very strange for Roos to now be wondering why they didn't. No doubt there was a reason, possibly a valid one, but you'd think Roos might know what it was.Comment

Interesting revisiting the rookie draft thread where we passed on Breust (and a few others) as a NSW preselection and the angst and confusion that followed. It seems that we collectively came to the conclusion that money was the main issue.

From the bit I saw I thought Roosy was being a bit tongue in cheek (as he often is) - I mean, what was he meant to say? "I stuffed up" would have summed it up. I think we all agree that drafting isn't an exact science, especially the rookie draft, and I guess you win some and you lose some. It does sound like he was quite a miss but at the end of the day I'm happy seeing a NSW boy doing well and we've been going ok without him this year I suppose....Comment

Pass, pass pass was a shock to us all at the time. I mentioned in the current Drafting Table post that perusing 2012 AFL lists that we have up to four less players on our two lists than many other clubs. Given the fact that every year there are a few bolters make good AFL players, not running a full list of rookies could be the difference between winning or not winning a flag.
Other than failing to rookie list Bruest, I've been concerned for some time that we failed to make good use of our geographic location and local knowledge with the NSW Scholarship Scheme. Fullness of time will tell the complete story but Tex Walker is playing for the Cows and would be nice at FF for us and some Collingwood friends tell me a massive ruckman Jarrod Witts will be a star.Comment

The club wasn't great at picking players back then and Roosy felt that it was a total lottery. Far preferred to pick up developed players. Looking at our first draft pick history I can seen why the club might feel there was virtually nil chance of picking up a player on the rookie list(depite the fact that we have had some excellent rookie list successes).
I've often been puzzled by our choices given available players (Johnston when we could have chosen Schoenmakers- obvious from the footage who had the upside, the younger Schoenmakers was feeding Johnston most of his marks ), Eddie Betts was available for ages (even if in Vic).Podsiadsly was available for ages as well (again, even if in Vic).Who know, could very well have been a money issue.
The satisfying thing is that I don't have the same feeling since Kinnear Beatson has been at the club. The level of homework and analysis seems to have taken a quantum leap,ala Gary Rohan).We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

Not sure I agree with this. Yes, the club has consistently tried to trade in experienced players to fill specific roles in the team. But every single year they have also brought in some players at the bottom end of the list - as indeed every club has to. Our first round pick history has been very ordinary (albeit with picks in the teens - not top 10 picks as we've hardly had any of those). But every club knows that there are diamonds to be unearthed amidst the rookie draft, and we've certainly had our share of them.
It comes down to cost versus benefit, and as Ugg has already mentioned in this thread, there was a bit of a financial squeeze on at the time. Even now, the club has to spend its moderate resources more pickily than those clubs who have money to splash around. When we rookied McNeil three years ago, the club commented that it hadn't budgeted to take him (or any other locals) in the rookie draft, but thought he was too good to leave behind. Presumably the club's assessment of Bruest fell just the other side of their perceived pay-off line. And with respect to Klemke, the other player who caused teeth gnashing in that thread, they look to have got it right, He lasted just a season at the Bombers (though has proved to be a very good player at NEAFL level).Comment

Ironic that at the same time as reading a thread about the one that got away, there is another thread on this board talking about Moneyball and how successful the Swans have been with their recruiting! I have probably said this on here before, but the point of the Moneyball strategy is not that it's infallible, just that it is a system for making something that is an inherently uncertain judgement, the future performance of a baseball/football player, a little less uncertain. Similarly, the Swans occasionally get it wrong too.Comment

I have rung the Sydney Swans ONCE in my life.....on the day of that draft I rang to ask if there was some sort of error on the website...because surely we had drafted Luke Bruest as a local rookie.....getting him for free even.....and i wanted to know the names of the other locals who had been inadverdently left off the list but the woman who answered the phone said "we didn't think any of the locals were good enough to draft".....surprised pause...I just said "Really?" and she said "really." End of conversation.
