2012 Free Agency and Trade Thread

I thought we should have one. Roosy said on OTC last night that free agency was terrible for the AFL and that it'll just see the strong clubs stay strong and the weak ones stay weak. Early suggestions such as Port players leaving tend to back that up.

Goddard to Essendon is done as is Knights to Richmond (which seems like the sort of move that free agency was actually designed for - he couldn't get a game at Adelaide so moved elsewhere).

Anyway, post all comments, analysis, deals and speculation here.

Freo also submitted a bid for Danyle Pearce, I think Port has the right to match the offer.

Realistically we would be without our Norm Smith medalist had this system been around 4-5 years ago.

Dont like it, especially that it costs the bidding club nothing. They should lose a draft pick comensurate with the salary offered (same system to determine compensation picks for the start up clubs)

Yes - it seems a bit of a free hit system for the 'poaching' club. But there needed to be some more flexibility for players to move around (such as Adelaide's Knights who couldn't get a look in) - whether the balance is right is still to be seen. The trade system was constipated (to say the least) with clubs like Essendon too churlish to trade sensibly and only ever wanting something for nothing (which appears to still be the case for them - no surprise to see them being the first to raid another club). Paying well overs for Goddard IMO.

In terms of how it will affect the clubs, early evidence is not encouraging for the poorer performing ones (either financially or on-field). And then there is Port. Still without a coach, they are a sitting duck for attack from everywhere. Leon Cameron could arrive with 20 spots open on his list!

The elephant in the room is the big risk that the competition goes the way of the UK premier league, or any of the European football leagues, with only four or so realistic flag chances each year who remain the same from year to year. Hopefully the salary cap and drafts will keep things broadly as they are, but the AFL will need to keep its eyes open and make sure things don't get skewed to those with the biggest cheque books and most power.

Happy to include the trades as well as free agents in here btw.

Can anyone explain the mini-draft for me? I've been looking for information on it but can't find anything.

The way I understand the mini-draft to work, GWS had 4 picks in the last two years (which ended up being 2 last year and 2 this year) which they could trade to other clubs for the right to select from the group of top 17-year-olds in the country. Last year Gold Coast secured Jaegar O'Meara and Adelaide got Brad Crouch while GWS got high draft picks in return. Both players were at the clubs this year but are not on the senior list to play games until next year. This year GC traded pick 2 for first selection in mini-draft and picked up Martin and so GWS have one more pick they can trade which Melbourne are rumored to be interested in. Don't know if that helps?

Thanks Alison. So it really is a "mini" draft then. They get two picks that are "outside" the main draft that can be used to select a 17yo such as Martin or O'Meara, or they can trade the right to select one or both of the 17yo kids with another club for whatever they are prepared to offer them. This year GC had pick 2 in the draft so they traded the 17yo pick for that. What they've done is given themselves the top 2 picks for a second year in a row rather than trade the pick for an established player.

And now, with the Melbourne deal, the Giants have 1, 2, 3 again, plus 12 and 13.
"It's up to the rest of the players in the room to make a new batch of premiership players next year," Adam Goodes, triple Bob Skilton Medallist, October 7, 2011.

The Giants really are going to become a powerhouse if they can hang on to the bulk of their kids. Of course, their COL allowance will help that.

Excellent analysis of yesterday's deal with Melbourne here by Emma Quayle. I love this kind of almost nerdy draft analysis. It explains the rationale behind everything rather than just being a puff piece on one of the kids.

                            Dawes to Melbourne

LOL Dawes to Rabblebourne for Pick 20 and Pick 45 to collingwood, and Melbourne get Dawes and pick 58.

Melbourne's footy department have lost their marbles. Some serious headwobblers at that joint! thank god i go for the mighty bloods

Disagree, he will take the pressure off Clark. Dawes has a presence the fees need. Good trade for them with their current list
