What an interesting draft for us. We've gone for pace and good size. I notice that our picks figure strongly in the higher ranks of testing at the Draft Combine, not bad when you realise there were 200 kids tested.

We obviously think Towers can step up this year or we wouldn't have taken a 22yo. Will he continue our spud first picks or break the mould?

Membrey could either be a steal or a fizzer. If he's the former, other clubs who picked before us will rue not taking him because of his in between height, if it's the latter we haven't burnt too much with pick 46. He could be a great lead up forward, kicks long and accurate - I like :-)

Still got three spots on the list, one for Tippett, the other two? I think if we have vacant main list spots we can take extra rookies so maybe that's the plan unless there's a PSD target to add some depth for 2013 as we are thin on depth.

Not concerned about no KP draftees, they weren't that great this year. Siggins appeared to have been stolen from under our noses.

Garlett the shock non draftee, will get selected at the pointy end of the RD but may only flourish away from the distractions WA and at a club with very strong culture. The guy is top ten in skill so worth a try. Surely Sheedy will want him :-)

etc but height down back never goes astray.
None of our KP players are on their last legs and if Tippett does get to us we're one KP player too many in the best 22!

Full confidence in those we already have in the system to eventually replace those that retire.

Sorry, I dont see it. I am underwhelmed. What a shallow draft this is.

Also I would like to note: the Swans appear to be making contingency plans for life without Tippett......discuss.
Many people are of the view that Membrey isn't tall enough to hold down a key position and also doesnt have the tank to go midfield/up the ground. As someone posted earlier, this kid reminds me of a young ROK only stronger. ROK developed a tank over the years...hopefully Membrey can. If he can ..this kid could be one absolute steal. Also, remember Parker dropped lower due to clubs thinking he was too slow...hmmmm....good judges.

and Primmy, as for your comment about the Swans making contingency plans without Tippett...not sure where you read this. In fact, the draft choices of big bodied, pacy running players suggest otherwise. I'm confident he'll be a Swan soon enough.

And for people concerned about not drafting young key position players...remember we have a FS selection prospect due soon called Dunkley who will play for Gippsland Power.

                Can he hand-pass?

Looks like we are getting a ruckman in the rookie draft and a key defender? We do need a key defender before young Dunkley will be ready. josh will be 18 next year but won't be ready to play seniors for about 3 years at least. that will make Teddy and LRT both 33. I think we need a big guy back there soon, maybe we can turn Tommy or Jesse into a defender. There is Lockyer he is 191cm a bit short for an AFL Key but then again so was Craig Bolton and he saw a gun!

Key defender are good to pick up and like most have said we do have time and there is always the rookie draft.
How are the players that the swans could pickup. One key defender that most thought the swans may pick up was.
                        West Perth (WA)194 cm94 kg
Kevin Sheehan says: ?Strong tall defender who uses his body well in man on man contests. Provides good run from defence, averaging 12 disposals and four marks for WA in the NAB AFL Under 18 Championships. Deceptively quick and agile player for his size who uses the ball well either foot.?
There are a few player we can still add to develop over the next few year but the draft the swans picked up the best skilled players in each pick some of these kids are real guns.

]Interesting that Dayle Garlett didn't get picked at all. Surely someone will take a chance on him in the rookie draft

                          Maybe this was the reason
.But talented fellow WA forward Dayle Garlett, who was thrown out of the AFL-AIS academy for disciplinary reasons earlier this year, was not drafted.

He would also be a good rookie pick up. Now That the swans no dick ? policy

Josh Dunkley was playing school level U15 midway through this year, which suggests he has only turned 15 this year. That makes him 3 years away from draft age. He may not develop at the same rate as he gets older and/or he may not want to come to the Swans as a FS. Of course, he might become a gun who can't wait to play for us instead, but it is a long way out to be hanging your hat on a player joining the club, let alone becoming a senior AFL player.

to me it appears we have covered primarily two of our mid tall defenders that are getting older......and these are crucial roles to fill

                              Mal - Dick
                              Mattner - Harrison

It is hard to say whether Armstrong will kick along and be the next go to player in counter attack like Shaw and or Mal has been for us

Then it is arguable that Towers and Membrey could cover two other roles

Shaw - Towers for me looks more of a flat chat counter attack player
ROK - Membrey (ie ROK's old role of being a decent leading upfield target........ie more like what Goodes has played of late)

I think it is fair to say we played with very tall forwards (LRT, Goodes, Pyke) in 2012 and that suited our game plan..........a Membrey style of power forward provides us with real flexibility in game plan also as we will need to evolve and adapt now that we are the team to beat

ROKs more recent role of playing midfield only will have Mitchell and Parker fighting over Judes and Roks roles
"be tough, only when it gets tough"
