Ah Ha!! That might give some fillup to the dangled carrot of a 1pm announcement by the Swans.

I know this is a little off the topic (thats has probably been done before!!) but I think due to age and experience that Rampe will be first up. I have followed Lloyd through a mutual friend from day one. He was hoping to get a game in NAB cup and maybe a shot at playing later in year. He has gone at it all like a bull at a gate. He is listed to play this weekend but I do expect (with absolutely no information just a guess) due to his age the club may not play him in until mid or late season. Would make good sense as young guy (19) and if things go well he has a long career.

I really liked his game against the Saints, him and Rampe. Unless we get hit hard with injuries its hard to see him playing this year.

Latest news - Gary Rohan onto Long Term Injury list, no rookie yet promoted. Suggests to me that Rampe is very close to actually getting a senior game, maybe even Round 1 if Mattner or Smith don't get up.

I believe Mark is almost certainly correct. In past years clubs without a full list of 40 senior players (including outside vets) have been permitted to nominate rookies eligible to play senior footy. Now that the outside vet designation has been abolished, there is no reason to believe that a club with fewer than 40 senior players can't still nominate rookies.

I am curious why the Swans have so rarely used this option. The last Swan I can recall being nominated pre-season as a designated rookie was Paul Bevan, all the way back in 2004. The reason might have something to do with the salary cap. Once a rookie is designated as a senior player for the season, at least part of his salary has to count in the cap. I have the figure 50% stuck in my brain somewhere, but it could be the whole lot. I believe the answer is somewhere in the CBA, in case anyone can be bothered tracking a copy down. If a rookie is so designated at the start of the season, whatever proportion of his salary counts in the cap is there for the whole year.

In contrast, if a rookie is elevated to cover an injured player, he will only count towards the cap while he remains on the senior list. Once the injured player returns, the rookie's salary no longer counts in the cap. So a club that is close to the limit of its cap might be wary about promoting a rookie right at the start of the year. Bear in mind that no club knows exactly what its TPP will be at the start of the year, because performance elements of contracts and injuries can impact it. Clubs have to leave some leeway.

Last year the Swans chose to put Alex Brown on the LTI at the start of the year to allow them to play Cunningham in round 1, despite the fact we only had 38 senior players and hence room on the list.

As Aaron has pointed out, the club almost certainly has the option of putting Rohan on the LTI now if they want to have Rampe (or Lloyd) available to play the early rounds.
Wasn't Harry Cunningham elevated last year at the start of the season? Played the first game against GWS. Got 4 posies. Rohan is on the long term list and we will be able to use a rookie in his place until he is ready.

Sorry but unless there is a long term injury young Jake will not get a go. He is a rookie and it would take a long term injury to elevate him. By the way I think he is playing pretty good footy and if there was an injury he would be very much i the mix.

He must be doing some things right though, he's still playing NAB cup games ahead of a few other senior players. He may be slight in stature but the same could be said of Lewis Jetta.

Agree Dam he has been very good! i love that he is a very long kick, ala Mal and Drey. He slotted 2 55 metre goals which is impressive. But I love that the kid had the confidence to slot them from set shots.

With the Swans being well known for their all over the ground defence, I can see how his build would work against him. But muscle also makes you slower and heavier so maybe they can have one or two little speed demons evading defenders and kicking goals

I thought his defensive work was ok last week. As a matter of fact the thing that stood out for me was that he appears to have a big tank. The last person who was like that was Hanners.
