Truly very sad. I have never been a huge fan of the flashy player - and Marty was the ultimate as a blue collar defender so I loved him - always covering reg and ted, always supporting our attacks and for me it was his running in the gf as well as the tackle that mattered - he ran from our fifty to inside theirs and then out again to get birchall. Wonderful committed professional.Comment

The sort of selfless player that makes us a team that is a cut above the rest'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

Favourite moment..tackle on Birchall on the wing in dying minutes of the 2012 GF. Won us the game.
Other than Nick Smith he would have been the easiest bloke to coach.
Horse would have just said "Just do what you do".
Vale Marty

I'm sad to see him go. A good player for Adelaide, he became a very good player for us and can hold his head high as a vital contributor to the competition's best back six. Wonderful defender, very appropriate that perhaps his last act to receive public recognition was that tackle in the GF. Thanks Marty, I wish you farewell, and enjoy the rest of your life. Perhaps we can look forward to a father/son pick sometime down the track! He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. A very sad day for the club, but we should also celebrate a wonderful career, and a great trade for us from Adelaide. I actually did a search on Mattner a minute ago on google and it bought up an old bigfooty forum thread, with plenty of Adelaide fans thinking they had got an excellent deal for Marty. I think we won that deal hands down, and we have first dibs on any father-son selection (does he have any kids - if not get to it Marty, another Mattner in red and white in the future would be an absolute pleasure!)
Has been a brilliant player for our team, an absolute pleasure to watch. The little highlights package shown on the swans website summed up his career wonderfully. But its hard to go past that tackle in last year's grand final - I hope he sees that as his finest moment on the footy field, as I certainly do.
When the ball spread out that way on the field, I almost looked away - I remember I had a chill go down my spine thinking if Birchall gets clear here, they are away and will take it to the other end. But my lack of faith was unpalatable - the brilliance of that tackle from our Mr 1%er in that play epitomises what a wonderful player he has been for the club.
Farewell Marty, and thanks for the wonderful memories - and enjoy telling the story of your tackle that helped your Swans win the flag to your kids and grandkids in times to come - I know its a moment that still brings a broad smile to my face and always will!"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I too am glad that Marty will be remembered for what he was best at and on the biggest stage of the year!.
Although he was criticized for being slow and and a one sided player, he did things that our better players didnt and his effort was always 110%.
Thanks for the memories and especially THAT tackle.Comment

He can retire with his head held high and know he saved us when he applied what I have always referred to as the Grand Final Special.
