    Rampe v Heath

Well it's a bit quiet around here this weekend given the upcoming bye so I thought I'd put this one forward given we play Port next week.

Campbell requested a trade to Port Adelaide to get more opportunities at senior level. As it happens Alex Johnson goes down for the season in a pre season match opening up a spot that he could have slotted into. Forunately we picked up Dane Rampe in the rookie draft and he has stepped up with aplomb.

My question for those ressies watchers is who do you think Campbell could have stepped up to the same level in that role that Rampe has?

Have we won out, lost out, or had a draw by replacing him with Rampe?

Impossible to tell and impossible to compare their two seasons. Without taking anything away from Rampe's contribution, he has stepped into a defence alongside the experience of Ted, Reg, and Smiffy, and sitting behind arguably the best midfield and almost certainly the hardest working midfield defensively. Campbell has less experience around him and is in a much younger and poorer team, notwithstanding Port's improvement this year.

I really loved watching Heath in the reserves last year, and if he were still with us, he'd possibly filling a hole right now in the senior team. But his reasons for moving on were perfectly reasonable and I hope he thrives at Port as they gradually improve over the next few years.

We couldn't foresee losing all of AJ, Marty and Rhyce in 2013. Sometimes you just have to let a decent player take an opportunity elsewhere when you can't promise that player one at his present team. I think we had to let Heath go. We may have already planned on drafting Towers as Mattner's successor. Rampe has been a very pleasant surprise.

I reckon Heath is going to go on and have an excellent career. Would of loved him to stay.

Having said that...something Rampe has that Heath doesn't.......A spearing, penetrating, left foot kick. Which has been improving out of sight these last few weeks, as his confidence grows....

It looks like it could be a real weapon for us down the track.

Are you kidding, Heath was one of the best kicks in the whole Swans squad last year.

Yep, Campbell is an excellent kick. I'm suspecting Ernie's point may be more on penetration than general field kicking? Dane's long kicks definitely do seem to maintain a decent forward trajectory as they descend, not at a Malcesk level but definitely well above league average.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Rampe is the natural successor to Mattner. Mid size, booming left , fanatical tackler, better than average in the air and a terrier on the ground, the odd clanger but overall gives a lot more than he gives up. I see him as a long term fixture. I believe he cost us two quarters of orange and some bootlaces. Yet another example of how the Swans recruiting staff plucks gold out of thin air.

Yeah that's right Stella, it's those 40- 50 mt low penetrating kicks that I'm talking about. I'm not talking down Heaths kicking, I'm talking up Dane's.
