    AFL may control cost-of-living allowance

THE AFL could take control of the cost-of-living allowance given to the Sydney Swans and Greater Western Sydney in a move which would douse tensions over the salary cap dispensation.

Under the possible scenario, the AFL would administer the money ? approximately $900,000 in 2013 ? ensuring it is not used as a lump sum to target recruits.

The allowance came under sharp criticism in 2012 when the Swans recruited Kurt Tippett at the end of the season, on what is believed to be a multi-million dollar long-term contract.

The AFL is known to have recently discussed the allowance and its future, with one suggestion being to regulate the money to individual players on its terms.

It sounds like they'll directly do what we already do anyway.

It's exactly what Andrew Ireland says we are already doing.

It's only impact, as an earlier post said, will be to stop the bull**** and misinformation from Victorian Clubs, backed up by lazy one eyed, so called, journalists .

It also potentially constrains GWS, since we don't know now they use it.

                      Likewise!

I have no issue with it, we've been pretty strong whilst defending our ability to get Tippet by saying to everyone that everything is above board and evenly spread and not just a lump sum so in theory it shouldn't impact us (I appreciate our administration folks would rather have as much control of things as they can, though).
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Its the first step to removing it.

The way the AFL is heading, they will make it descretionary* rather than a fixed formula, so you can bet when we go after a key player from one of the favoured clubs the COL will not be able to be used to top up his contract.

But the biggest travesty is that the Brisbane Lions dont get any of it, and have been uncompetitive since it was removed. Grossly unfair for them, and the price they have to pay for beating 2 favoured clubs (Essendon and Collingwood) in grand finals.

                        * descrtionary administration, as in allowing a confessed drug cheat to continue playing.

I don't like the tone of the wording above though. It implies that we used the COLA to buy KT, which is clearly incorrect.
