    He did remonstrate for a long time, hesitated to give the ball back too. I think the umpire realised how #%^ed the decision was, so the ump wasn't going to compound his own mistake by penalising Mal further.

      Dissent is different from abuse. There were 2 fifty metre penalties given in the Geelong-Freo match for abuse-swearing at the umpire. Players often put their case to the ump.
