Can we win the flag from outside top 4?

While most people agree that winniny a flag from outside the top 4 is just about impossible under the current system, a few people have mentioned in the past, if it were to happen, it'd be a proven finals performer who were decimated by injuries for most of the season before getting their best team on the park for the finals.

While at this stage should finish top 4, if we miss out and have our best 20-22 out on the park come finals( which will be the first time all season)can we win it?

For Instance we lose to 2 or 3 of west coast, richmond and collingwood, get our players back and knock off both or one of geelong n hawks, yet still miss out by half a game/% etc.

Using your scenario of few injuries come finals...Then of course we can.

That's pretty much how we won in 05...Played all 4 finals, 3 away from home.
Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MT

Although Adelaide is the only team to have won from outside the top 4.
It is possible, just doesn't happen too often.

That was a different system. They lost their first final.

Under the current system, two teams have made a prelim, 0 made a gf.

It would seem extremely unlikely to me. We lost against Port last week remember? Not to mention getting comprehensively beaten by Hawthorn and Geelong earlier in this year. I think it will be very tough from inside the four, let alone outside.

It is possible, but I wouldn't be getting my hopes up.

If we were to finish 5th or 6th getting a home finals first week....AND a reasonable fit team of almost our best 22 ...possible. Odds against it.
History says that we need to finish 'top 4' and ideally winning the first final to get the week off. Freo is the interesting piece in the puzzle. We wouldn't want to have to travel to Freo to play a final. Not just travel factor but I rate them.
