    Swans addict?

I am increasingly feeling like I am too invested in the fortunes of the Swans. Each year it gets worse. And ironically it gets worse as the Swans become more successful.

    Check these general links out:

Signs of Sports Addiction - Yahoo! Voices - voices.yahoo.com

Are Americans Addicted to Spectator Sports? The Answer is an Emphatic Yes | Christian Drug Rehab

Does anyone else think they may be too invested in the Swans or footy in general? It can be highly addictive. Too much time, money and emotion invested in other people's lives?

It's a serious question and I'd be genuinely interested if people have any thoughts on it.

It is an interesting topic which I know most of us could relate too. I tick most of the boxes bar betting on games. Even though all I would like to do is move away from Sydney but I don't think I could leave my swans (quite sad/pathetic). Broken remote control games during close games on tv, weeks ruined by loss's. Can't talk about anything related to the game without having my tone change to a very serious one. Will miss important events in other peoples lives to go to a game (aside from weddings).
I have been following the Swans since the beggining in the early 80's going to every game with dad - yes even all the big losses..and after last years final I almost felt this bit of relief? As if I could now walk away as my work here was done. Did anyone else feel that way as a long time supporter? Don't get me wrong, I still love it as much as ever but I am a tad exhausted as such - and finanically hurting from travelling!
As I wrote this I got the text for the Swans app..must go and download it!
      You show em Sydney.

That's just it, woo - unless Sydney win the premiership every single year until the end of time, it is an inevitable set-up for extreme disappointment, due to becoming so invested. But I'm not being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to be invested in it. My moods are determined by whether we win or not, and at least I know I'm not alone.

It has got to the stage with me that my friends neighbors family barrack for the Swans just so I don't have a bad week and am in despair.... Even against their own team. A win equals ecstasy. A loss equals tragedy. My daughter in Perth won't ring after a loss. It is the only reason she follows footy... Just to see how my mood will be.... That is just silly... It's only footy!!!!!!

With the GF victory, then the Tippett affair, the pre-season and the Home and Away season alll so exciting I totally forget to take my heroin injections.

                And now I'm clean!

It could have been so much different if I were an Essendon fan.

What woo said....all of it, except for the can't move out of Sydney part as I had to do that for any chance to further my hopeful career.

But I add to it this... I consider Sydney Swans to be my religion (I even listed it as such on the last Census), and a Horse is the Pope!

I have found over the years that the wild excitement has kind of fractured, but what I do feel when we win is deep satisfaction. I am also very tight around the lips when we lose. Please note the "we" here. That's the crux of the matter.

I am proud of the boys, i am proud of the fans (mostly) and I get pissed off mightily when others turn up at the game to chat and drink, and not watch the play, only cheer when everyone else does. I mean why bother coming in the first place! I find that completely disrespectful. hmm...

So addicted? I would say so. The thought of not going to a home game hasn't occurred to me in 17 years. I have been prevented from attending by a broken leg, and a couple of deaths door flu/back spasm events. Even so I felt I aught to have written an apology to the Swans explaining my absence. I go to each and every curtain raiser, and watch each of them with concentration. I am there at sparrows each time and get faintly frantic if the gates are open before I reach them which is, you have to admit, faintly stupid.

Its part of my life fabric. And that's fine by me. No I don't paint my face but I check my redandwhite gear each year for replacement/refurbishment. It has taken me years to work out the perfect carry bag, the perfect rug, the perfect tasty for the day, the slickest way home. I have made many footy friends as well as acquiring good friends too. Wouldn't be without it.

Living in NY hasn't dampened my passion for the club one iota. Losing is now worse because I can't really vent to anyone here, they would probably think the Swans is a broadway show.

I remember being so invested in this club at the end of 1995 when I started supporting them. I was just a kid but Sydney losing would ruin my whole week, and my mum would buy my copy of InsideFootball each week which I'd read for any mention of the Swans I could get. I remember crying on the floor after Alessio kicked that heart breaker after the siren, it felt like I'd been kicked in the guts.

I handle losses differently now. I justify everything by the following Wednesday when the team is only a day out from being named. If it's a close loss I know we were just a few tweaks from victory. If it's a big loss I know it's un-Sydney like and we'll bounce back.

Last years flag was incredible. I regret not being home and hugging my brother and mum as the siren sounded, but it's still one of the best feelings seeing the Swans win a flag.

This thread is slightly depressing, however. Time to seperate myself and see what the boys are saying on SwansTV.
