Hawk president urges Franklin to think carefully before moving

That was the headline from the AFL app news feed, citing Hawks President Andrew Newbold

Ummm ... seriously? The hypocrisy & double standards astounds me & gives me the [censored] sometimes. To try & guilt a player into staying ... Clubs seem to have conveniently short, selective memories!

<"I like to see players play their career at one club. I think people can underestimate what that actually provides when you play at one club for that long." Says Newbold>

Every year clubs delist a few players to participate in the draft. Sure, it's a rule. They have to. But not much loyalty to those few players.

Then there's guys like Joey Kennedy & Benny McGlynn ... seeya fellas! You're not good enough for our best 22 we'll see if we can get a good trade for you.

You mean like you did to Dermie when you thought he was too old ... yet he had a stint at Sydney (albeit unsuccessful) & Collingwood (a little better there) to keep his career going.

<"If you look at someone like Brendon Goddard, is he a St Kilda player or is he an Essendon player when he finishes his career?" Newbold said on Saturday.>

Yup, despite his brief forays with the Swans & the Maggie's, Dermie is still considered a Hawk. Dougie Hawkins is still a Bulldog even after being forced to the Lions because he desperately wanted to play on at the top level.

<"You can see people like Peter Hudson who played pretty much at one club and the benefit they get from sticking with one club." Suggests Nobbold>

The Hawks didn't have quite the same sentiment toward young Paul Hudson, did they?

<"That's something he'll have to ask himself." Says Newbold>

Hilarious! Buddy's conscience will be somewhat eased by $10,000,000 over 6 years.

Solution: you wanna keep him? Pay him more. I know it can't always be done. But that's the crux of it.

A footballers career isn't a long one. & if the reported GW$ is true, it sets Budwi$er up for life. For LIFE! Many of us would have to work 100 years (or way more) to see that sort of coin. Buddy would be crazy not to take it.

Clubs always want to keep their champion players, but the fact is some move on an being a two club player doesn't always harm them (eg Barassi, Ian Stewart, Lockett, Roos ... the list is almost limitless)

& for all Hawthorn's high & mighty stance, they seem to forget how they acquired Brian Lake quite recently. There were a few Doggies fans baying that they wanted him to be a one Club player at the time ... Newbold was quite the traditionalist then. Yessiree he was! Because traditionally football clubs do all that they can to get their man.

$10mil over 6 years from GW$ should do it for Buddy.
