VFL Semi Final 2: Sydney Swans Reserves v Belconnen Magpies

Saturday 31st August at Blacktown International Sports Park

Shame it couldn't be scheduled for the Hawks curtain raiser but I suspect it would have been hard for Belconnen players to be available for a Friday afternoon trip to Sydney

Plus side is that all emergencies will play a full game

I believe the answer is yes. I've tweeted the Neafl account for confirmation but so far no response

Given they will only get one game before finals, don't you think it would be better for them to play a game in the seniors. ie; picking up the tempo, playing with the team they need to gel into.

I thought it was something like, if you have played senior football then you must have played at least 6 NEAFL games throughout the year to play finals ... Which would rule them both out. There's definitely a criteria, you can't play any listed player.

I'm pretty sure they can. Provided the seniors are also playing and therefore you aren't stacking the reserves because they have to be playing somewhere then it is ok.

It's only whre the seniors are out that the eligibility issues in finals applies.

Their game time can be much better managed in the 2's where they can play it by ear as to when they come and go. Winning or losing in the ressies is way way down the list of priorities for this club, as it should be. The problem of trying to manage their time in the seniors is it may well impact on the rest of the team, many of which also look like they need to somehow find a freshen up. If Sammy was to go down after 10 minutes again, let's face it, an absolute possibility, then we find ourselves down on rotations in a game that means jack and we would be desperate to give some of our midfield as easy a game as possible.

If the club decides to go down the path of resting players who need the rest (ie. plenty of them) and throws the likes of BJ, Harry, Biggs and X in, then happy to see Jets and Sammy also join in the fun.

                  NEAFL Semi Final 2

Sydney Swans Reserves v Belconnen Magpies
                  Saturday 31st August 2013
                  Blacktown International Sports Park

Note: Match being streamed on neafl.com.au

The winner of this semi goes straight on to the NEAFL Eastern Conference Grand Final in a fortnight's time while the loser will play the winner of the Ainslie-UWS clash. Although I'm sure the Swans will be aiming to win this game, losing wouldn't be such a bad result either as it would mean another game the following weekend, also in Sydney (and possibly against a strong Giants team) instead of a week off.

Belconnen have done a remarkable job to turnaround some lean years in recent times, having not qualified for the finals in the past 3 years and picking up the dreaded wooden spoon in 2011. The return of gun midfielder James Bennett from the SANFL alongside his brother Lexie has played no small part in their amazing revival.

                  R21 Reserves 31.11 (197) defeated Belconnen 10.6 (66) @ Sydney Cricket Ground
The Reserves were in devastating form, bouncing back from their previous week's defeat to the Lions Reserves, to crush former powerhouse Belconnen by 131 points. Thanks to some fantastic conversion in front of the sticks, the Reserves led by 43 points at half time and pulled away convincingly in the premiership quarter with a 12 goals to 2 showing to put the result of the match beyond doubt. Trent Dennis-Lane continued his superb form playing both up forward and in the midfield and finished with 7 goals while Jesse White had his best showing of the season playing as the primary ruckman.

Goals: Dennis-Lane 7, White 6, Lamb 3, Morton 2, Cunningham 2, Gordon 2, Spangher 2, Naismith, Roos, Mitchell, Lynch, Brown, Potter, Broome

                  Team List
                  Listed players
                  Changes
                  In: Lamb, Jetta
Out: Harry CUNNINGHAM (seniors), Brandon JACK (seniors), Shane BIGGS (seniors)

The limit of 12 listed players takes effect in the finals series, but with the number of injuries to the Swans squad as a whole it doesn't look like it has cost too many players a game, as it stands it looks like Mitch Morton will be the only one to miss out, being named as an emergency for the seniors but not for this final.

Lamb will replace Cunningham in an inside midfield role, and Jetta should also line up in the midfield, although he has played as a half back flanker in past reserves games. Although time is short with his comeback but with the speedster's last game coming in Round 10, the Swans won't be pushing him to the limit and the expectation is that he will only play part of this match. Biggs' absence will be harder to cover, he has been the leading rebounder over the 2nd half of the season but there are plenty of listed players down in defence and they'll just have to collectively pick up the slack.

Naismith may also be short of fitness, having only made his comeback (half of a) game 2 weeks ago and is likely to only spend portions of the match in the ruck.

                  Academy Players/Topups
In: Brookfield, Green, Hoctor, Plug, Spinks, Zoppo
Out: Abe DAVIS, Jacob DAWES, James DUNN, Isaac HEENEY, Jack McKINLAY

With the major ruckman of the last game Dawes omitted, Head is likely to take on main ruck duties due to Naismith's aforementioned lack of fitness. Perris has spent signficant amount of time in the middle and has racked up his fair share of possessions.

                  Belconnen Squad

                  In: Donohoe, Wenke
                  Out: Damien HECTOR, Daniel JORDAN

The 3 danger men in the side are James Bennett, who is clearly their best player. In the final against Ainslie last week, he collected an amazing 46 touches, 13 tackles, 12 clearances and 7 inside 50s. In our Round 11 clash, he had similar numbers tallying 47 disposals, 11 tackles, 13 clearances and 11 inside 50s. An accomplished player who won awards during his stint in the SANFL, the Swans may elect to send a run with player to curb his influence.

Last year's Mulrooney Medalist, small forward Shane Harris has had an injury interrupted year, only playing 5 games as well but his ability to kick big bags of goals will be crucial to the Magpies' chances. Playing coach Matthew Lokan has filled in for Harris for most of the year, his biggest haul returning 12 majors against Broadbeach as well as bags of 6 goals against Ainslie, Hills Eagles, Queanbeyan and Tuggeranong. He also is versatile enough to play in defence.

The other major ball winners in their side include Harper, Sharp and captain Lexie Bennett. Matt Porter is an experienced ruckman who is excellent around the ruck contests, and Belconnen may have the edge in this area.

Thanks ugg. I hope Lewis can have a good dip, and I think there are others who could yet play a role with the seniors.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)
