    Background to Biggs

A nice piece about how tortuous the way into senior football can be. Kinnear Beatson features again.

    Shane Biggs At Sydney Swans
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Helluva story isn't it Mr B. Straight up the Swans alley. Classic.

Still as skinny as, but...Skinny Lappin is a point at hand here, so why not a Skinny Shiggsy.

Kinnear Beatson really should be enshrined in a statue outside of the AFL - he has so much to do with how well we've recruited!

It's a great story and his composure last week was wonderful. I have seen a lot of him in the Two sand thought he had something but started to doubt, with some of the other resies watchers saying he may be a bit soft. He certainly is not soft, he is composed and took all the punishment the Hawks could dish out and came through beautifully. He is highly skilled and hardly ever wastes the ball, he must have been delivering at over 70% last week. He also does the hard things like tackling and getting dirty even though that is not his natural game (outside player). He does everything asked of him. Crouchy must find him a joy to coach. His kick down the wing to a player in between two Hawks over the head of one and straight on the chest of our bloke was just sensational. Someone said he reminds them of Mal, in the way he moves but you don't think he is moving yes but he is faster and makes good decisions most of the time and finds a way rather than just bomb, whereas Mal does the latter if the big opening is not there. I believe his kicking skills are better than Mals.

Pity there are no Biggsy types down at Warrandyte this year. They came last and are now relegated to division 4 of the Eastern Football League.

My beloved Wantirna South are in division 3 and the seniors and reserves are through to the Grand Final. We beat Doncaster on the weekend, who had big Nathan Thompson and Aaron Fiora running around for them. Fiora is still a receiver, but is deadly on the left foot.

We are a young side and have several players that would go well in the NEAFL, but are not up to AFL standard.

I have been following the swans ressies threads for a while now and the most recent on Biggs debut as I remember watching him play several times a few years ago for the Warrandyte Bloods and am interested in how he has been going and his story that was put well in this Age article. Its a strange coincidence maybe that he played for the suburban team I support as well as the AFL one.

I would go to games at Warrandyte to watch my brother play and he may have played a game or two with Biggs when my bother was pushed up to seniors from the reserves. I remember watching what was a close game one day and Biggs was playing on the wing or fwd flank, and kicked several goals to bring the seniors home. This skinny kid seemed to be everywhere and looked like a problem that could be easily sorted out by a big bruising opposition player but seemed to be eluding all tackles with quick decision making, quality skills and athleticism.

I remember my brother telling me that he jumped straight into the seniors from the under 18's which seemed odd because I thought you had to move through the ranks a little slower but I'm no expert on how suburban footy works. He said there was plenty of hype about him at the club but he felt he wouldn't hang around long and spoke about the better pay deals for playing in 1st div efl than 3rd div with Warrandyte. I remember asking him how likely it would be for Biggs to be picked up by an AFL team and I got a look that suggested I was being naive. I saw my brother on the weekend and confirmed we had this conversation as I also did when he was drafted by the Swans.

I let my brother know last week that Biggs was playing his first game and he said he already knew as news had traveled fast and that the Warrandyte Bloods boys would be watching the game and cheering him on. Its funny that people keep comparing him with Mal too because I think they have grown up in the same area. I'm told Biggs grew up in Warranwood which is a neighboring suburb to Nth Ringwood where Mal is from.

Great words there, sounds like he is a seriously well liked guy, and his success is most definitely deserved.

My big question is just how are we going to fit everyone in next year - if AJ comes back fit and firing, he's a ready pick. And you'd be awfully hard to leave out Mr Rampe after what he's done this year. And now Biggs last week well and truly put his hand up for further senior selection. If we can get everyone fit going into 2014, we are going to have a hell of a lot of depth and good players just waiting to grab their chance in the reserves.
