My point is still why doesnt the buying club pay anything in draft terms? If the AFL could work out an approximate compensation for players such as Ablett, Brenan and Scully to leave as draft concessions, then why not tie the size of the contract into the relative draft compensation that the hawks would receive from the swans the same as if they'd traded the player in the first place?

That way the players dont all line up to say they want to go to club A or B and perpetuate the cycle of success. That is the whole point of the draft..! Fair enough if we want Franklin, but the club that loses the player should be compensated from the buying club. That way there is no legal challenge as every club has the right to procure a player at agreed terms. If the club is fair dinkum about getting the player they know what they have to do. I dont see how that can be challenged in court.
I agree with you that this would be a far better system. I've posted a few comments on this in the past. But the players don't want it, because it reduces the incentive for the acquiring team to give them a big pay package. The big attraction from the club's point of view with getting a free agent is that is doesn't cost players or draft picks. The players can shop themselves around for the best deal.

I would think that the big name players have the most influence in the AFLPA, and they are the ones that struck this free agency deal.

Definitely a shift in thinking from the swans, hopefully one that doesn't rock our foundations too much. Those who say this doesn't go against our no dickead policy are kidding themselves. I guess the rule doesn't apply to ridiculously talented dickheads though, which is fair enough maybe.
I saw Horse speak at a function after last year. He said the caveat on the no DH rule is if they're really good at playing footy.

I was not following AFL closely during the years that John Longmire and Wayne Carey played so successfully for North Melbourne. Does their partnership provide any clues to how Tippett & Franklin might work together?

I believe references to court challenges are to do with a person's liberty to live/work where they want. That's why Hawthorn couldn't enforce/make Gary Buckenara stay in Melbourne to finish his contract when he wanted to go home in the late 80s? My contract law history is a bit hazy though so I might be wrong. (Buckenara incidentally has a role in Swans history briefly too)

What I have found interesting to watch is the media reaction - they have been completely blind sided by this - so convinced were they that Franklin would go to GWS that nothing else, to them, would be part of the equation. This has come as such a shock, and lets be honest , the media think they know everything even before those involved in a story do. They really have the @@@@s about it hence all of the hoo at and actually giving Eddie more time than normal to carry on. It was the best kept secret ever!!! I reckon red and white looks better on Buddy that brown & gold. And the interest in him will be huge - our membership numbers should go up a lot!!
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

It will be interesting to see if increased interest in the Swans because of Buddy (etc) translates into greater membership numbers. One thing is for certain, 55,000 fans in an upgraded SCG will be awesome.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

Having Buddy could also translate into more games at the MCG instead of Etibad and also another couple of Friday night games against big clubs!
How many did we get this season? Was it 6 or 7? I felt like we got a pretty good deal this season and it might get even better!

If the Hawks do match the offer, what is likely to happen afterwards?

Now it becomes a case of who blinks first. Hawthorn don't really want to pay him that money - they just want to ensure that they get something for him (and they think they can extract something better than a free agent compo pick, which they would have gotten from the AFL if Franklin left as a free agent). We have to free up cap space, so we might put a combination of Everitt, Lamb and a middling draft pick on the table. What would make it MORE interesting is if Sydney then say "fine, have him" and Franklin decides he wants out (which he is allowed to do). He goes in the preseason draft, GWS can't afford him now that they've commited to Mumford, and we pick him up, again for free, while Hawthorn gets no compensation. That would be pretty cheeky and hilarious.

My best guess is that both clubs will posture and huff and puff for two weeks and then settle on a trade consisting of aforementioned players that we'd have to move on anyway.

Why doesn't anyone seem to care that Colin Sylvia has deserted his club after they supported him through all those years to go to this year's Grand Finalist for nothing? He's an unrestricted free agent so Melbourne don't even get a compo pick. Oh yeah, it's the COLA.

We must really be as good as we think we are, because there seems to be so much envy going around.

Also, take a look at Hawthorn's list now. Buddy and Guerra gone, and a slew of top players on the wrong side of 30 next year. Mitchell, Lake, Hodge, Sewell, Hale, Burgoyne, Gibson. They are obviously a good team, but on the way down.

I'm sure Melbourne get a compo pick, restricted/unrestricted doesn't mean the original club doesn't get a compensation pick, it just means that they don't get a chance to match the offer.
