    TLM Countdown - Rnds 14-15, 2013

Today's rounds are brought to you by Xie Shan and a glass of wine or two.

    Round 14: Sydney 8.17 (65) def Carlton 5.13 (43), SCG

The Swans were looking to bounce back from their shock loss to the Power the week before against a Carlton outfit that was desperate to keep its finals hopes alive. Despite an excellent recent record against the Blues, the Swans had not beaten a Mick Malthouse-coached side in Sydney since 2005, so it loomed as a massive danger game. Xavier Richards made a surprise debut, donning the sub vest after Mitch Morton was a late withdrawal before the opening bounce.
Kurt Tippett lit up a sodden SCG with some brilliant skills in the wet conditions and Craig Bird had a game high 33 possessions. The Swans were in control in the first half and would have held Carlton goalless for the half had Nick Malceski not been penalized for a bizarre deliberate rushed behind which left all 25,349 of the hardy souls who braved the elements scratching their heads in what was a contender for worst umpiring decision of the year.
The second half was a bit of a slog with goals absolutely precious and Carlton slowly began to erase the deficit, but a mix of opportunism and desperation from Benny McGlynn with a couple of goals saw the Swans over the line.

Goals: Tippett 2, McGlynn 2, Bolton, Pyke, Parker, Mitchell
    Brownlow: 3. R O'Keefe (Syd), 2. C Bird (Syd), 1. B Gibbs (Carl)
Bob Skilton Medal: Craig Bird 40, Ryan O?Keefe 37, Ted Richards 32

    TLM Votes
    5 Craig Bird
    4 Kurt Tippett
    3 Nick Malceski
    2 Dane Rampe
    1 Mike Pyke

    Round 15: Sydney 16.20 (116) def. Melbourne 13.7 (85), MCG

The Swans were at unbackable odds to win this game given Melbourne?s horror season, they had sacked their coach Mark Neeld only a couple of weeks earlier and had appointed Neil Craig as caretaker. The return of Sam Reid from injury unfortunately only lasted ten minutes with Reid re-injuring his quad in the first quarter. The Swans were never seriously threatened with only wasteful kicking preventing a blow out. To their credit the Demons put in a much more competitive performance compared to some of their previous efforts earlier in the season and did not stop trying until the final siren. Young forward Jack Fitzpatrick impressed with three goals for the Dees but the real surprise of the match was four goals to Brandon Jack who used his pace in the forward line to great effect.

Goals: B. Jack 4, Tippett 2, Bird 2, Everitt, Pyke, Parker, Mitchell, K. Jack, O'Keefe, McVeigh, Lamb
    Brownlow: 3. K Jack (Syd), 2. J McVeigh (Syd), 1. D Terlich (Melb)
