TLM Countdown - Semi Final, 2013

    By Chammond.

    Semi-final: SYDNEY 13.8 (86) defeated CARLTON 8.14 (62)

Sydney kept their premiership defence alive with a courageous 24-point win over Carlton at ANZ Stadium in front of 38,000 fans, but what should have been a rousing victory for the Swans was soured by injuries to Kurt Tippett and Tom Mitchell.

Last week, Hawthorn steam-rolled Sydney after half-time, and this week the Swans followed that same blueprint, keeping Carlton goalless in the third quarter as they surged away to a nine goal advantage at the final change. Sydney stopped to a walk in the final term, but the game was well in the bag long before the final siren.

Despite the early injuries, there were no weak spots in the Swans? effort. However, Jarrad McVeigh?s performance was spectacular, amassing a game-high 42 possessions which included a finals record 20 disposals in the second quarter.

Luke Parker (three goals) always looked dangerous inside 50, and key defenders Heath Grundy and Ted Richards provided regular rebound possession, accumulating 55 disposals between them. The usual suspects Dan Hannebery, Kieren Jack, Josh Kennedy and Ryan O'Keefe all had strong performances. Overall, Sydney had 97 more possessions than Carlton, and laid 21 more tackles.

The ANZ Stadium surface copped a lot of criticism as players regularly lost their footing, particularly on the wing.

GOALS: Parker 3, McVeigh, Jack, Cunningham 2, O'Keefe, Kennedy, Jetta, Bolton
Bob Skilton Medal: Jarrad McVeigh 50, Heath Grundy 44, Kieren Jack 44

    4 Luke Parker
    3 Dan Hannebery
