    Best 22 for 2014

Well now it looks like our list is complete with only the new draftees to come, I thought I would make an attempt at our best 22 for 2014.

    Smith Richards Johnson
    Malceski Grundy McVeigh
    Jetta Jack Hannebery
    Goodes Reid Rohan
    McGlynn Buddy Tippett
    Pyke Kennedy ROK
    LRT Shaw Mitchell Parker
    Bird Rampe Cunningham

    Notes:

LRT and Shaw definitely get a run for their experience and versatility. I can see Rampe and a few others going past them in 2015 (or earlier) if they get re-injured.

Bird and McGlynn could easily be switched.

Goodes to play a small forward role.

No room for Reid in the backline (unless AJ takes while to get back) but definite place for him in the forward line.

    B - LRT Richards Rampe
    HB - Malceski Grundy Smith
    C - Rohan K. Jack Hananbury
    H.F - Jetta Franklin Goodes
    F - Parker Tippett Reid
    Foll - Pyke McVeigh Kennedy
    Inter Bird Mitchell B.Jack
    Sub ROK

    Notes:

    - Johnson might not be ready for round 1 so LRT will slot in
    - ROK will come if the subs bench to provide some midfield grunt in the 3rd quarter.
    - Franklin, Jetta, Rohan, B. Jack, Goodes, K.Jack and N. Smith give electric pace.

McGlynn and LRT are very stiff to miss out. Tippett is 2nd Ruck so him and pyke alternate in the forward line

my gut feeling is that benny mcglynn will hold his spot but it is very possible we wont play mcglynn and rohan and on that basis i am sure we all want Rohan in the forward line where ever possible

mcglynn finished slow in the season 2013 - not sure why he lost his mojo but he is a very solid player for us and does his job very well

last 4 seasons he played 80 or so games for over 110 goals and the pressure he puts on the hbf / back pockets is intense - thats over 25 goals per season for a midget defensive forward

If all are fit (which never happens), there will be some tough decisions to be made.

            Smith Richards Johnson
            Rampe LRT Malceski
            Jetta McVeigh Hannebery
            Reid Franklin Rohan
            McGlynn Tippett Goodes

            Pyke Kennedy Jack

IC - O'Keefe Shaw Parker Mitchell

Bird 23rd man - I think O'Keefe and Shaw will cover the shutdown roles.

Would prefer Mumford in there as well. Strange not to have two dedicated ruckman. Changes the winning formula.

If everyone is fit (won't happen), LRT and Shaw would not be in my team.

              Smith, Richards, Johnson
              Malceski, Reid, Grundy
              Jetta, Hannebery, McVeigh
              Goodes, Franklin, Rohan
              McGlynn, Tippett, O'Keefe
              Pyke, Kennedy, Jack
              Parker, Mitchell, Bird, Rampe/Cunningham

Best 22 (assuming all players available)

                Defence
                FB: LRT, T Richards, Rampe
                HB: Johnson, Reid, Malceski

                Midfield
                FOL: Pyke, Kennedy, Hanneberry
                CTR: Jack, McVeigh, Jetta

                Forwards
                HF: Parker, Franklin, Rohan
                FF: O?Keefe, Tippett, Goodes

                I/C: Bird, Mitchell, Smith
                Sub: B Jack
                Rotational: Cunningham, Membrey, Lloyd, Robinson
We need a squad of 26 to 30 players who are capable of stepping up at anytime. These players should be rotated through the team during the season to try and get some senior experience into them. Hopefully get 6 games each into them by the end of the year.

Grundy plays early in the season until Johnson returns from injury. I can?t find spots for Shaw and McGlynn in my best 22. But they are valuable back-ups and would walk straight into the team if there are injuries.

The reason I think LRT will play over Grundy is due to the ruck issue.

LRT and Tippett are the obvious (and only) choices to give Pyke a chop out in the ruck.

Tippett and Pyke swapping is straightforward.

For LRT, there has been a couple of comments emanating from the Swans about Reid playing a swing role. So you'd expect Pyke to bench/forward, Reid back, LRT to ruck.

...and the fact LRT is a better defender.

Serious question: Would the 2014 Swans team - on paper - be the strongest Swans team to ever run out onto the field?
