I haven't checked this but he probably also holds the record for most years on an AFL list without playing a senior gameComment

I know a lot's been said/written about Moneyball and how our recruiting strategy is (in some ways) similar, but one thing that sometimes gets overlooked is that Billy Beane (manager of the Oakland A's) himself was a first round draft pick out of high school who didn't live up to expectations, because the major league wasn't for him. (I think he said it was the only decision he made in his life that was based on money and he'd never do it again.) What's between the ears is just as important in determining whether a player succeeds or fails.Comment

Hence the origin of Ricky Barhams 'No Dickheads' policy.
Some see Buddy as a bit of a dickhead (I don't), but the alleged policy is not applicable for proven players as you know what you are getting and what they are capable of. If the club thinks they can safely deal with the personalities they should sign them.
Barham spoke of interviewing scores of draft aspirants where in most cases there was little to separate them. He said that when there is such a fine line, he just puts the pen thru the 'dickheads' because they are not worth the risk. Given players were not literally falling over themselves to get to Sydney back in those days, it was even more applicable.Driver of the Dan Hannebery bandwagon....all aboard. 4th April 09Comment
