    AFL Journalism

Just to show what a sorry state AFL journalism is in, Fox Sports' Sam Landsberger was fooled by this obvious fake of what was purported to be a CT Scan of Geelong's George Burbury's broken jaw.

Besides the fact that the jaw image looks nothing like a real CT Scan, there are so many other obvious problems that a child could easily see.

    Burbury Jaw.jpg

First of all, the impact to Burbury's jaw is on the left side and the break on the right side. You would think this alone would be an obvious giveaway.

There are also all kinds of chipped bones and other deformations that would not be evident on a living being.

This is quite obviously not a CT Scan, but a photograph of the skull of a deceased person.

Maybe Fox should hire someone qualified to review these sort of articles; perhaps someone on Essendon's medical team.

On the one hand such journalistic efforts are hilarious, on the other . . . extremely depressing!

I think I need to watch "Buddy Party" again.

Just before you condemn the journalist I need to point out that the scan looks like a 3d reconstruction of a CT scan. In my line of work as a doctor you see this quite frequently. I do not know if this particular scan is actually George Burbury's but if you want to see similar images just google '3d reconstruction ct scan'.

I have to say that I have not seen a 3d reconstruction of a ct scan, and there does seem to be a fracture line on the right side of the mandible, which would make the double sided break pretty bad. They did report that he broke his jaw in 2 places, so I my apologies to Sam Landsberger. Burbury looks pretty good in hospital given how bad the scans look.

That 3d ct scan technology is pretty awesome. But looks different from the ones on the net.

          Retraction

Looks like I was definitely wrong about this one.

Also should take back my criticism of signing Tom Derickx.

Plus I broke my hand 3 weeks ago.

So having my worst pre-season ever. If I wasn't already retired, I would seriously have to consider hanging up the keyboard.
