The Inquirer - First Round Losss

Interesting article on first round losses in AFL.com. I had no idea that the Swans had such an appalling first round loss record. Did make me feel a bit better about last weekend though.

I've always believed that the premiership winners are those that build up to a peak in September, not those that kick arse from day 1 of March. The Swans did it beautifully in 2012 and I think Freo did it well last year. Thoughts?

There are, in my opinion only two ways to build up and win the flag. Either be the outstanding team all year, like Hawthorn did last year, and there are plenty of other examples as well (Port in 04), Brisbane a couple of times during their run), or be up there in the top tier of clubs and peak at the right time (almost freo last year, us in 05 and 12). I think this year might be a season where the second approach comes out on top -> I don't think the Hawks will be as good as last year, but maybe Freo will become the dominant team?

I will be more concerned if we don't see a genuine reaction agaisnt the pies. Even if we get beat, as long as we get a clear indication that the attitude is ok and that the first round was just a usual swans slow start to the season (made worse by the retarded spilt 1st week), then it will be ok. If we play as deplorably as we did for 3 quarters against GWS, i will be concerned that there might be genuine substance to the rumours going around.
"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."

I don't think that the 'rumours going around' will have anything to do with whether we win or lose against the Pies i.e. discontent, friction etc, but more to do with 'how we come to play' if that makes sense.
