    ... when Caven met Plugger

    8th May 1994

PETER Caven likes to tell people he looked like Brad Pitt before Tony Lockett left him splattered on the SCG turf like a bug on a windshield.
This week marks 20 years since that devastating hit, which left Caven nursing a compound fracture of his nose and Lockett opponents baying for blood.
Peter Caven?s memories of the day he tangled with an angry Tony ?Plugger? Lockett

Heartbreaking was how I felt. I assume many swans fans felt the same.

Found the video of the final quarter. Craig O'Brien is also playing for the Saints.

I was in the top of the Noble and 'pure rage' would be a much closer description than 'heartbroken' when Plugger gave the big 'up yours' salute after the siren. Cannot remember myself being so worked up as much before or since as our unassailable lead slowly disintegrated in front of our eyes.

I had a good mate who never missed a game stand up and declare with a minute to go 'If we lose this, I'm never coming back'...lol

Of course he was back the next week, but sadly cancer had a say a few years ago and he is no longer with us...

Dale Lewis with a handy 7 goals from 8 kicks. Plugger had 7 Frees Against!
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

played a lot of games like that in 94 and 95 - games where we were the better team for three quarters but couldnt quite win. sometimes wed be blown away in the first quarter and win the rest of the match comfortably and so on. that was part of the reason why i wasnt really surprised by 96 - we were clearly heading upwards as a team.

Awful day. We never won in those days and here we were, 10 goals up. They just started kicking them from everywhere. I'll never forget Dean Greig's goal.

Plugger was a bit stiff to miss the 3 Brownlow votes. Maybe the 'fairest' element came in!

Heartbroken. Not likely. Total rage. I wanted Plugger killed. How many weeks did he get for the hit?

It was in the article. Caven said Plugger got 8 weeks while he was out for 12.

I laughed and then felt sad when I read this. The good memories tinged with pain that we have of dear friends now departed.

This was before my time as a Swans' follower. Even so I felt sick watching the video. No wonder the match still burns for those of you who were there!

Also I gather this is the match (and quarter) when Plugger, in kicking for goal, kicked the ball straight at Kenny? I had heard the story before but didn't realise the particular significance.
