I actually don't mind Thursday night games - I'm bucking the trend.

I like how I can still have a full weekend.

One thing I've noticed over the past year having travelled around the US is that other cities have a much stronger culture of weekday attendance at sport/music/comedy etc. than Sydney. I put this mostly down to our horrible public transport system.
The Yanks are more fanatical and passionate about their sport. I went to an NFL game in 2009 (New York Giants V Oakland Raiders at the old Meadowlands). This was a regular season game and the atmosphere was the most intense and energetic I had ever encountered at a sporting venue.

I've seen Australia go 2-0 up against Iran in 2007, I've seen Malceski snap a ball over his shoulder in 2012. Think about this two moments and imagine the rush of it occurring my a whole 30 minute period.

When the Giants were 30 points ahead the energy went out, but the intensity early on was amazing.

I posted that the AFL should recruit some NFL administrative talent into the AFL senior ranks and I still believe that.

The NFL is the most professional football system in the World and we should learn from that. Monday night and Thursday night football need to be embraced. People who don't embrace Monday or Thursday night football believe that the pubs should stay closed on Sunday!

[QUOTE=Margo;641921] and unless you are a martial arts specialist, you would not risk late night train travel.

I travel from Liverpool (although I actually go from Glenfield station via the Airport Line) and have done since 2003 by myself and have never had any trouble. I am certainly not a martial arts specialist as I am a retired grandmother of 10.

The problem for me is that I couldn't justify 2 days annual leave to go to Sydney for the game.

Hope they don't make AFL too American. Went to NHL, NBA and MLB games (NFL was in offseason) and the incessant pop songs and 5 second stings during every break in play drove me nuts by the end. I also think they play too many games per season in those sports, which dilutes the passion of the fans and stakes of the games. What's one loss matter in an 82 game NBA season? The NFL probably have the balance right.

To be fair, they're more fanatical about EVERYTHING. I'm not saying we lack passion, but the baseline here is definitely leaning more to the skeptical side. You want enthusiasm? You have to earn it. (this was always evident whenever I worked in companies or teams that had worldwide offices)

I went to an NBA game in 2012, atmosphere was fantastic until the Lakers started sucking, which was just after the quarter time break. It was quite flat after halftime, which led me to the belief that they just don't travel as much over there for away games - I might be wrong.

I still believe the two systems are very very different - for one thing, it's much harder for the average punter over in the US to get a game ticket, let alone a playoff ticket or a season ticket, therefore the TV ratings are so important.

we are nowhere close to selling out a majority of games, so I'm a bit mystified as to why we are making it harder for the public (especially families) to get to the games. I guess money talks, and the networks have paid a lot of coin for the rights, so they get a lot of say in scheduling.

Obviously I'm still going to the game, but gee it makes it hard to bring the kids to a lot of games, so I'm paying for a family membership that is returning very little value.

177th Senior AFL Match - Round 4, 2009 - Sydney vs Carlton, SCG. This is obviously out of date. I suppose I'll update it once I could be bothered sitting down with the fixture and working it out....

This. Saturday afternoon is for local footy - the AFL shouldn't play that timeslot in Sydney. (Local footy mod here).

As for Thursday night AFL - bring it on! Should be a cracker of a game tonight; see you there!!

That is utter crap Matt80 - People that don't like Thursday and Monday night football have what I consider to be particularly valid reasons for not liking it.

People who think pro sports in America are the bees knees must not have experienced College sports. College fans are truly nuts and the atmosphere for a lot of college sporting events can be amazing.

I think Melbourne crowds rival the best in the world. We in Sydney are a bit more laid back generally in comparison.

Count me in as a pro-Thursday fan, but just to see how it goes. It's certainly going to be a hassle getting from the city to the SCG later on....

Americanisation in sport brought us the excruciating Kiss Cam at Test cricket. No more please!

                              Some large generalisations going on.

Anyway, lets see if our notoriously fickle fan base can crack 35,000 and what the TV ratings are vs a normal top 4 friday game of ours. Do it again for a few years and see where we are at.
