could our ressies beat a VFL team ?

Just wondering if you think we finally have a ressies team that could come top of the ladder in the VFL ?

For me Geelong, Hawks, pies etc always have had so much depth right thru their lists..........and it feels for one of the first times we have as much depth as they have been able to call upon year after year

I have said for a number of years that the reserves should play in the VFL as South Melbourne. That being said, it would be interesting to find out.

      Probably.
The quality of skills in the VFL is not that fantastic, and no where near as fast as AFL.

The problem with that question is that while we have close to a full list of players to assemble a team from, the reserves would possibly be competitive. But as soon as we're down to 12 or so listed players and the rest of the team is comprised of a load of physically under developed teenagers, it would probably get blown off the park by a club that has a solid core of ex-AFL players and decent, experienced VFL players in their mid 20s. So the Swans would have to invest in some permanent, mid-aged top ups to balance things up. That would limit the opportunities of the cream of the Academy players, as well as development players like Patrick Mitchell who'd be nowhere close to VFL standard but can be carried in a NEAFL side.

Really interesting question, with a full list to choose from, you'd think we'd go OK

But agree with Liz , depth would be the problem.

It would be a financially crippling option for the club. Imagine the cost of flights and accommodation to send a team from Sydney to Melbourne every week.

...or every second week. But then the VFL clubs would have to agree to travel to Sydney once each per year.

Just look at the SANFL. Port's reserves team are on top.

There's no point in joining the VFL. The NEAFL is there to help grow the game in Qld and NSW.

I don't see any room for a regular game against teams from the VFL, WAFL or anywhere else, but it would be interesting to have a finals series that took in the top teams from each competition. An end-of-season one-off or limit to two matches would be manageable financially and feed interest in the game while providing the players with a chance to show their wares on a national stage.

The Americans with North Melbourne (Eric Wallace) and St Kilda (Jason Holmes) are doing pretty well in the VFL.

WHat about in the foxtel cup. That pitches all the good teams from each league against each other??
