Tom Derickx drops carpentry job to focus on footy, now spot in Sydney?s team is cemented

Hey Herald-Sun, thanks for doing one of those recruit-set-to-play-old-club stories on Tommy D. But since when does a carpenter "cement" his place? How about 'Ex-carpenter loves new joint'? You also missed mentioning he's not the first carpenter to resurrect his career.

Harrison Ford was a carpenter before be scored the role of Han Solo! He allegedly was seen doing some work on the casting set when someone said that be should audition. He was a part-time actor as well.

Tom may end up as Dene Cox within two years if Harrison Ford is anything to go by!

More is likely that Tom will end up like Harrison Ford than Dean Cox, unless you mean retired from football.

        Jesus was a carpenter.

        Tom D = Han Solo = Jesus

This bit has its own interest:

?They [Kinnear Beatson and John Longmire] just said, ?Look, we?ve lost (Shane) Mumford and we?re looking for a mature body to back up Pykey (Mike Pyke) and we?re not really that keen on playing Kurt Tippett in the ruck?,?? he said.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

Good point Dimelb - and the fact that he's held his place this week while Pyke returns is a big vote of confidence.

Looks like Tommy will also take over the LRT role of seemingly-useless-but-actually-quite-handy cult figure.

The criticism of Tom has been a bit harsh. It is exhausting to ruck a whole game. That's why traditionally teams always had 2 ruckmen. With fatigue comes skill errors.Coupled with that his role as a "crash test dummy" ruckman
means by the end of the game there would be little gas left in the tank. He can expect hard physical contact at every stoppage. He is doing his role however and has therefore been retained.

I would think Pykey will play a lot out of the goal square. Can see him kicking a bag of 3 or 4. Would love big Tom to nail one from 50 against his old mob too.

Agree. I was surprised to find he had only played 2 games prior to joining the swans, with minimal time in the ruck.
The only thing that really lets him down is his marking. He has got himself in the right position only to spill the mark.
If he can start nailing some of those marks like Pyke does, he will be a much better player.

Poor old LRT. Been out injured for weeks, but still gets the odd backhander in passing.
Every now and then some of us need reminding of his first half in 2005 GF, where he had a lock on the Norm Smith.
And his awesome defensive work for ten years now, not to mention plenty steadying goals.
                      Yet still gets 'quite handy'!
If he's not already a life member, it won't be long.

Rest easy RB42, he is. As of last year's Championship Dinner I think.

Derickx is ranked 10th for time on ground percentage at the Swans this year with 84%. That puts him ahead of all our midfielders except McGlynn, McVeigh and KJack, who obviously have resting roles onfield.

It also puts him ahead of guys like Brodie Grundy (75%), Hale (83%), McEvoy (73%), Naitanui (69%), Dean Cox (76%), Tom Hickey (50%), Sandilands (81%), McIntosh (81%) and level with Lobbe (84%).

Ruckmen with a higher TOG than him include Minson, Mumford, Giles, Goldstein, Maric and Longer. Some of the best in the league and one of the brightest young prospects.

What Derickx is doing is playing an energy-conserving style that enables him to maximise his time on ground and let us fit 100 minutes worth of vaguely competitive ruck contests into 22 players more efficiently. He rarely (if ever) jumps, he simply finds the opponent's line, makes body contact, and tries to prevent the other ruckman from getting a clean tap. What he's doing could be called anti-rucking, or ruck-tagging, something like that.

Derickx shouldn't just be judged against a hypothetical better ruckman, but also for the fact that he's letting us get away with only playing one true ruckman. His value to the team is arguably also the midfielder or extra forward he allows us to play by soaking up contests and ruckman time on ground.

Even with Pyke in the team, he might well let us leave Pyke deep as a target for more time than we otherwise could with a less durable ruckman than Derickx.

Funny you should mention Harrison Ford. He was discovered when he was building some cabinets George Lucas' home. Just goes to show that you need to make the most of your opportunities.
