Jetta: is it just me?

I've thoroughly enjoyed Jetta's time with the Swans - waiting for him to score his first goal after a season's worth of behinds, watching him run away from speedy opponents, and kicking some mercurial goals.

However, he's lost a step this year and is regularly getting run down (probably due to added weight), he's not looking like he's enjoying his football, and one highlight play every second match is not cutting it when freshies like Laidler and Cunningham are showing how it's done severall times a match. I'd honestly prefer to see Brandon Jack getting a weekly game in his place - more heart, more tackle, more smarts. Tom Mitchell is also influencing the game more in limited opportunities.

I know it's pissy to complain about a member of the first 22 when we're on a 10 game winning streak but some insight into stuff I'm not getting about Jets would be appreciated.



PS: I've gone from a Buddy hater when he was signed to a total convert. He's got the bloods culture and is the hardest working big forward I've seen in the red and white - playing right down the ground, being a terrific defensive forward ... what's not to love about Buddy Love

Not sure what is going on.
He plays alright when he gets the ball. Against the Tiges he was doing a lot of chasing down opponents which was good to see, but I can only assume he is carry an injury.
Not as fleet of foot as he used to be. Has managed to dance his way out of a pack, but is not working hard enough IMHO.

I think Jetts has suffered from a loss of confidence, but in saying that, I think he's still vital in our team.
I've found his defensive pressure impressive this year, most of the time anyway.
Whenever he gets the ball and he's 20 metres clear of anyone, he tends to want to kick it long, where in 2012 he would've ran the whole field and then some.

B.Jack doesn't have the engine that Jetta has, but once he gets his endurance up I think he'll over take Jetta.

It's sad, because he was one of the most exciting players in the AFL a few years ago, if only he would keep on running.

He is mildly disappointing in my book but still worth a spot in the 22.

It could well be that a change in scenery at the end of the season could be good for him and we would certainly get some trade currency from him. I know he has a young family and is away from home so that must be very difficult

I think they, our coaching staff, are keeping the reins on him. If he plays that sling shot role every week he will get a very solid tag and not get anywhere near it. Perhaps we will see the real Jetts in Sept?

This is crazy. I think he's in way better form than last year. His delivery into the forward line is precision and his defensive work has been outstanding and largely unsung. So maybe he doesn't smile as much but, as I've mentioned before, I think that's a result of him being tasked with diversifying his game and making the transition to a senior leader.

Explosive speed is fun to watch but if Jetts wants to be a 300 game player he needs more strings to his bow.

He had that leg injury last year and was out for a long time. He appears to have lost a bit of pace but his kicking accuracy makes up for it. What people don't notice is he fills in space and chases and harasses a lot more. He is simply playing a different role. Last night: 18 disposals, 78%eff, 17 pressure acts, 6 score assists, 11 uncontested possessions. Around 17 disposals seems to be about his average. He is on his own a lot and must be under instructions to deliver the ball to forwards rather than run with it. With a bit of luck he could have had a lot more goals.

He's arguably the best kick in the team, a ball travels faster from being kicked than being carried, and we now have two of the best forwards in the comp to kick it to. It's fun watching him run, but not as fun as watching us win.

Thanks guys, appreciate the responses and I agree that he looks like he's under different instruction. He also deserves a spirited tag based on who he is.

So, what's with attitude? It's Indigenous Round and Goodes and Buddy are worthy representatives on and off the field. Jetta, not so much, mainly in his personal presentation. Maybe I'm over-analysing this but no-one else is like this.

I think he has been great the last two rounds, showing a lot more facets than in his breakout season.
Something I noticed a few times yesterday at the game was his phenomenal ability to play through a congested area.

He did look pretty grumpy but has seemed fairly cheerful for the last few games.

So in response to the original question: I think its you not him.

He worked bloody hard last night and he did some nice things. As others have said he looks like he's working on a more rounded game. I'm liking what I see...... I wouldn't over analyse things with Jetts - he's a smart smart guy and a gifted player and he's playing his role at the moment....

I think it is just you. Yeah maybe he has not been as exciting to watch as 2012 but he is still by far in our best 22. He has not been running with the ball which he used to be measured on and I think this is what gives the impression of him not playing well. But he has been really great in getting out of congestion where no-one else would...has done it on 3 occasions in each of the last few games. He is also presenting well and taking some great marks on leads. I think he has been told to kick the ball quickly as sometimes he has had space in front of him. He hasn't set the world on fire but still consistently 10-15th best player each week.

I think he's been really important for us this year. When you look at the Inside 50 stats you realise how important. He has the second most Inside 50 stats behind Kizza with an average of 4.7 per game which is the 10th highest in the comp.

He'll never be a ball magnet but he doesn't need to be to make an impact. He gives us that outside run and pressure. It's a cliche but he's playing his role and IMO doing it well.
