Match Thread Ground Announcer at SCG is a shocker

There a number of things about the the new stands at the SCG that bother me but my biggest gripe is the Ground Announcer's lack of understanding of the game and the banal nature of his comments.

That final announcement summed up his complete lack of finese for me:

"C'mon Swans supporters get behind your boys for a percentage booster." .... Really???

Could anything he said be more disrespectful or challenging to an opposition player than to hear something like that.

Another problem I have was with the statements about "the state of the art new stand". What new stand with any real aspirations to greatness has only one way in and one way out? Trying to get away from the first level in the new stand is ridiculous and dangerous. If you are on the Eastern side of the the stand you need to make your way through the glass doors then all the way back to the far western side to either the stairs or escalator. God forbid there is ever an emergency. Moreover there is no way to transition from one bay to another except through the glass doors as the seating is unbroken all the way from the front to the rear of the level.

I agree re ground announcer. Also objected to the announcer on the oval (someone different I think) who referred to the match as "The Battle of the Bridge". I thought the Swans (rightly) objected to that stupid title and were not using it for the derby when it was a Swans' home match?

What is going on with that moustache that the on-field interviewer has got?

Just be thankful you don't have to put up with NRL ground announcers. Ours are brilliant by comparison.

Yes Meg, I arced up over the use Battle of the Bulge or whatever stupid name they call it as well. He only did it once so I assume a direct message was sent to him.

Absolutely agree re comments at 3/4 time. The percentage booster line was stupid and disrespectful. I'm not sure that Longmire would have appreciated it.

I'm waiting for the Ground Announcer to announce that "bubbling is not permitted anywhere within the SCG".

I miss Byron Cooke, he was the best ground announcer I have ever heard at any ground I've been to. He actually sounded like he knew a thing or two about the game and the team.
I don't live in the Sydney region anymore so I don't listen to Sydney radio, does anyone know what happened to him?

Had to listen to the game on SEN down here and a few times in the last quarter the ground announcer came on during the play and drowned out the commentary. It was so loud they had to turn off the effects mike while he was making announcements.

I don't have a problem with that. It's our home ground and statements like that make it clear to the opposition that they are not playing at a neutral venue. I'm all for building up the home ground advantage and Fortress SCG.

The announcement, Re:"percentage booster", at 3/4 time was dumb to say the least.

The guy on the ground looks like a 'c' grade porn star, crossed with Dick Dastardly.

But what really annoys me is the volume. It's just ridiculously, unnecessarily loud.

I've been calling for it to be turned down for a few years now.

I didn't like the ground announcer much on Saturday night, and on my first trip to the SCG for the year, I must admit I was a little disappointed by the seating in the new stand (I'm a red zone member). We sat at the front of level 2, and whilst the view at the near end of the ground is great, the fairly gentle incline of the new stand (particularly on level 1 below) means you feel a long way away from the play at the other end of the ground, as there just isn't the steepness there. We are going to try the front of L4 next time and see what that is like, but in terms of seating, I'm not convinced the new stand is an improvement on the red zone at the other end of the ground last year, which I must admit I quite liked.

The food facilities are far superior though, and compared to the old stands, its a hell of an improvement.
"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."

The Swans don't like the "Battle of the Bridge" term which was invented by Kevin Sheedy. It implies that north of the bridge is GWS territory despite the many years of work the Swans have put in promoting themselves and the game in that region. It was a bit of a dirty trick by Sheed's to plant that seed.

I'm not sure about radio-wise what he's up to, but I believe he hasn't been based in Sydney for a little while and was commuting from Melbourne for at least last season (possibly longer) to do the gig.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
