It's about buying into "John Longmire Football". When I look at stats now I don't look at kicks or handballs. I look at tackles.

John Longmire always talks about tackling and pressure as the teams main key performance indicator.

If you are not buying into the importance of Garry Rohan or Brandon Jack then you are not buying into " John Longmire Football".

Tackles and pressure acts win matches.

I should have looked at previous posts before I submitted my last effort. There would have at least been some holding the ball decisions in 448 tackles.

Just a quick one MCS ..........would it be fair to say that BJ for a fair period now has primarily kept his spot purely to pressure and tackle when the matchups week to week stack in his favour ?

Look, I'm not saying the theory is wrong.... I just find it implausible, especially when we are talking about guys (Rohan, BJ) who are spending a lot of time up forward. For BJ, I wonder if its is to do with the fact that we just haven't had someone to replace him with over the previous several weeks? I say that because you could argue that whilst Membrey is a forward, they are very different players, and Membrey doesn't give the ability to rotate through the midfield like BJ does. Mitchell can't stay fit for more than about 3 days, and I'm not sure we have any other midfielders really pushing down the door for a call up.

No one isn't saying that Rohan and BJ aren't doing a role for the team - but some of us think that a time comes where you need to show more than just being able to put on pressure and tackle to keep a place in the team. We aren't talking about Soccer here where someone like Nigel De Jong has made a career solely tackling and that's it. But maybe you guys are closer to the truth than the rest of it. I hardly think though our tackling is what epitomises 'John Longmire Football'. There is a lot more to the Swans at the moment than tackling and pressure.

I like the Soccer analogy. Kevin Muscat tackled pretty hard as well.

The Hawks are leading Adelaide at half time and surprise, surprise they are also leading the tackle count.

There are other elements to "John Longmire Football" apart from tackling, but the philosophy is built on tackling and forward pressure. Champion key forwards who can finish off the tackling pressure are also an element to "John Longmire Football". He had recruited two of them in two years. Players who can be flexible multiple roles are also an element of "John Longmire Football". I think of players like Reid, Mcveigh, Goodes, K.Jack and Cunningham who can all play flexible roles.

Brandon Jack and Garry Rohan are playing their roles in "John Longmire Football". The offensive stats will come. Those players have their defensive games in KPI territory and will ad some offensive icing to the cake.

Its all a great debate.......but i am very comfortable that tackling pressure is a massive part of the Swans mantra and game plan and I freely agree that there are so many components to how we manage clearances, matchups, zoning, plus 1 defence, forward pressure, fitness, tap work, forward structures.

If you think about any sport you have played or watched closely defence is a massive factor to ensure you are week to week in most games..........sure the attack of The Hawks and the now attack of the Swans certainly is hard to beat but it is built on the foundation of our defence/pressure/tackling !

About 15years ago the English Premier League determined 75% of goals in soccer come from 3 passes or less.

But the interesting thing is that over 50% of these goals come from turnovers due to tackling / pressure on the ball the balance from corners, set shots, penalties etc etc

In Soccer the ball generally has been kept with high possession to starve the opposition of the ball and if you score its a bonus

It would be interesting to see what the stats are now in 2014 as Spain in 2010 and Aust even in 2006 started to change the way the game is played "again" via very high possession and scoring from these efforts.........didnt work for them in 2014

BTW - This style of football worked very well for the Hawks though the last 6 years ie high possession high uncontested

Funny enough the Swans are playing the opposite to the Hawks ie very similar football to what the stats said re the English Prem League 15yrs ago.........

At 1 and 3 the players had to chart a way forward. "John Longmire Football" needed to be implemented more effectively and quicker players such as Lloyd and Brandon Jack needed to be brought in to execute the strategy. The game against Fremantle which featured the amazing tackling and pressure turned the season around. With an above 90 tackle count, that games was a great execution of "John Longmire Football".

As Swans fans we have enjoyed the recent record breaking run of success in no small part to the improved implementation of "John Longmire Football".

Surprise, surprise they have also kicked more goals. Also taken more marks. I get your point. But there must be balance.

The Hawks won the game and had more tackles 77 - 71. Jarred Roughead had one behind, but 10 tackles. Jarred gave an awesome display of "John Longmire Football", but the Hawks failed to get to the KPI of 80 tackles.
