Such a rotten day with the tragedy in Ukraine, the ongoing turmoil in Gaza, the dismal Federal political discourse (not being pro or anti our current govt on this Forum) and the death of blues legend Johnny Winter. A time when I'd love to be able to turn to my footy team for some escape but I'm now perpetually greeted with assaults on our COLA, our Academy & talk of our players leaving for salary cap reasons. While I am still delighted we recruited Franklin, this is all fall out from us daring to take on the established order of things. Changes to the draft selections of Academy players means that Eddie wins again. It's depressing and frustrating and angers me beyond something I can voice. I have just had a go at Richard Hinds on Twitter, a journo I normally expect better from, who has become the latest to accuse us of abusing the COLA to sign Franklin. I know he's a Collingwood supporter but he's normally more objective than that.
We should be focussed on nothing more than our phenomenal run of 12 in a row and revelling in the success of our team but instead we're spending our time warding off assaults on the way we have built up our club from the ground up by those who have never had to struggle. List management is a skill. If your club can't do it, you should be looking at it from the inside out rather than whinging about others who do it better than you until the rules are changed. We have had to do things differently and will have to continue to do so. Any attempts to develop and recruit our own players now look likely to be stymied.
Let's also note that all of this hysteria has happened before we have won a post-Franklin Premiership and before Isaac Heeney has even been drafted. It is also likely to hurt the Giants and Suns, and possible Lions, even more than us.
I want to love my club and barrack for them passionately without having to defend them. If we had been doing the wrong thing I'd be first to acknowledge it, but the frustration that comes with misinformation and defending against the bleatings of the ignorant and/or the liars is wearing me down. On top of everything else it's depressing. A world with no war, genuine concern for the ongoing care of our environment, and footy without the ancilliary BS is probably too much to ask, but at least one of them would be nice.
