Sure was a lovefest between Ed and Derm. Don't forget Hawks CEO Nettlefold is on Eddie's side regarding everything. Maybe AFL has told Eddie to keep quiet regarding Swans (one can only hope) so now he is letting Hawthorn do it for him.

The goodes no mark. I can't remember who kicked it to him but there was a clear lead from maybe macca about 30m out from goal with no player tagging him. I would have preferred the kick go there

I don't think there are any huge concerns to come out of the game, Sydney couldn't have played too much worse and the Hawks couldn't have played much better and we probably still should have won.

Our most important midfielders were down in Jack, Parks, Macca and Kennedy (even though his last qtr was huge) and our main link player out of the backline in Mal was flat as well. Our number 1 tall back and our number 1 small shut-down player in Richards and Smith respectively both had nights they'd rather forget and Grundy was ordinary too.

Roughead, Breust and Smith all had games out of the box and the liklehood of that happening again at the same time is low.

Our forward pressure was arguably the most non-existent it's been all year and our tackle count was unusually low. Combine all of that with the easy shots we missed and a team that was superior to us would have won by 6 goals +.

Completely agree that Rohan was awesome down back and this probably won't be a popular call but I think once Shaw returns that we need Rohan in the forward half. His pace and tackling is what we lacked down there Saturday night, the Hawks players ran off Goodesy and Tip like they were statues. It's not necessarily going to be the tackles he lays but his presence as well, he will make opponents think twice when they're looking to run and create out of their defensive 50.

Also, given Rohan's confidence is seemingly on the rise he is another viable marking option and 9 times out of 10 he will be matched up on a much smaller opponent. If need be we can always throw him back but I'd much prefer to see him starting in the forward 50.

I agree , I think it was the classic case of if it had been any where else on the ground it would have been paid - the umps took the easy option in front of a home crowd

Just like the HTB decision they didn't give at the end of the 3rd quarter. Anywhere outside the 50's imo and that would of been HTB guaranteed.

At least we should outlive the Hawks supporters. I walked out of the MCG into a fog of tobacco smoke. I had to look to see someone in Hawks colours who wasn't smoking. It was very strange. And the obnoxious attitude of the Hawks supporters certainly won't lure me to another game between the two clubs.

More generally, I agree that this wasn't a worrying loss - but another loss to the Bombers or Port would be. I'm glad the players have been reminded about how much losing hurts. I hope the next time we play the Hawks that Buddy is over his ex-team yips. The ideal for me would be if he kicks the winning goal after the siren in the GF and every Hawk supporter self-immolates on their fags or spontaneously explodes in a high dudgeon of self-righteousness.

I'm normally a very placid supporter, but my daughter witnessed me unravel during the game.

I flew down for the game and it is the second time (2012 Granny being the first) that I have been there to watch a Swans Hawks game. Their supporters are terrible. We were sitting in the middle of some and they were feral - put Magpies and Bombers to shame.

In the second qtr I thought some were going to jump the fence. A couple actually ran to the boundary line to have a go at the the umpire and swans players.

All he did was slag off Swans players and apparently called Goodes a black piece of ****. He may been spoken to outside the ground because it appears one of the women near us was an off duty copper. When he was challenged by a couple of women for his appalling language he just gave it back to them commencing with the F word. You know someone is bad when their own supporters turn on them. I have seen worse though; again Hawthorn supporters at AFL Park.

I and my sons copped the same as you did after a final against Hawthorn at Telstra Dome. These tools got in the faces of my sons who were 10 and 8 at the time, simply because they were wearing Swans jumpers. I have no time for them at all.
I made a comment above as well on the Hawk supporters. In addition as we were walking out the ground we were told by a group of Hawk supporters "go back to Sydney you @@@@@@@** cheats" .

I refuse to watch that show as they are both king sized d/heads. Their egos are both so big it is a wonder that they can both fit on a TV screen.

The funniest thing was when Buddy got a free because his arm was being held and the hawks supporters were going nuts even AFTER they saw the replay when it was sooooo obvious.

Oh and both my brother and I got told off for daring to yell out "ball".

                          MRP report re Laidler:

"Jeremy Laidler, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a Level Two Striking Offence (125 points, one-match sanction) for striking Jack Gunston, Hawthorn, during the third quarter of the round 18 match between the Sydney Swans and Hawthorn, played at the MCG on Saturday July 26, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 70.31 points towards his future record with an early plea.

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Hawthorn Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and a one-match sanction. He has an existing five-year good record, which reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 93.75 points towards his future record. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a reprimand and 70.31 points towards his future record."

I'd like to know what Gunston did to provoke Laidler. Not that a player should retaliate but I find it difficult to believe Laidler hit him just because he felt like it.

My girlfriend had to work very hard to stop me getting into a real fit of rage at the absolute idiot sitting near me. He was the epitomy of painful - full of absolute bollocks, complained about everything, at least 10 times made out that 'we only ever win anything because the AFL wins it for us', was borderline racist towards Goodesy, the list went on. If I had of been there by myself, I'm pretty sure one of us would of ended up being ejected from the ground. He was an absolute disgrace.

Their supporters are amongst the worst going around (I'd argue even more painful than Pies fans). It takes a lot of enjoyment away from going to the game when you have to put up with their utter @@@@ all night.

I wish the AFL, like it does in Finals, would provide some bays which were per say 'away supporters bays'. I don't want a situation like the European soccer leagues with segregation, but I'd like the option, outside of sitting with the lovely people of the cheer squad, to sit in a bay full of Swans fans. I'm tempted to write to the AFL to raise the idea, as I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like it. It only has to be even a couple of dedicated bays - just somewhere where, if you so desire, you can buy tickets and know you'll be sitting with fellow supporters of your team.

That's pretty much what me and my girlfriend got, from some drunk dickhead hawks fans in a bay several away from us, as we made our way out a couple of minutes out (wanted to try and beat some of the crowd). Not very pleasant at all - and completely uncalled for.

+1 to not attending more games between the clubs (unless its finals/grand finals). Their fans were awful losers in 2012, and they are just as painful as they win (as I've found out a few times, but particularly on Saturday night). They are exceptionally bitter still about our 'stolen flag' of 2012.

I'd love Buddy to be the catalyst for the Hawks getting knocked out this year. He's had a lot of possessions and played well in both games against them, without being accurate. If he brings his kicking boots against them if we meet in the finals, I can see him kicking at least half a dozen, even with Lake back.

This is not a recent phenomenon regarding Hawks supporters either. I went to the match at the MCG in 2009, I think it was. We lost by a kick or so, I was there with my mum and dad. After the siren went, this typically arrogant, self-indulgent stereotypically Hawthorn wanker stands up faces us and screams in our face?@@@@ off back to Sydney!!!! They are an absolute disgrace. They were a disgrace at the 2012 grand final and will be a disgrace again when we smash them in this year's grand final too. I cannot wait.
