Sydney Swans swoop for $15m sponsorship

AFL minor premier Sydney Swans will reap about $15 million in sponsorship revenue this year, believed to be the one of the highest amounts for an Australian sports club.

The commercial income and a record membership number should provide a boost in net profit for the Swans this year, which would rise further if the club goes on to make and potentially win the AFL grand final later in September.

Should the Swans meet second-placed Hawthorn, for whom Sydney star Lance ?Buddy? Franklin used to play, the grand final would be a ratings bonanza across Victoria and NSW in particular.

Already, the Swans are one of the most popular AFL clubs in terms of television ratings, with the team being the most watched across any sports clubs in Australia on Foxtel in 2013. Viewership figures for Swans games in 2014 across the free-to-air broadcast on Seven West Media and pay-television provider Foxtel are up about 20 per cent to about 720,000 per match.

Crowds at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where the Swans play most of their home games, are at the highest levels in 17 years, with total Swans membership up 10 per cent from 2013 to slightly more than 40,000.

Even if the salary cap limits player salaries it still must be so much better for players to be part of a financially buoyant club.
