Footy's a cutthroat industry for all involved.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

That is sharp assessment stellation, a very sharp assessment.

How about we remove umpires and just go with computers and video footage? umpires are a necessary part of the game that make mistakes occasionally, sometimes really big mistakes. But no alternative has come up yet so we just have to live with it!

I can't say he will be missed - although he has mellowed a bit this season, or is it just that Stevic is so bad he makes Razor look a bit more blunt!

                That's a bald assertion.

How many other people think we should just go back to goal umpires in lab coats and hats? We didn't need video review then.

+1 for this. I'd like Umpires back in white as well, instead of this fluro rubbish they wear these days. A little bit of tradition back in the game would not be a bad thing.

I like the current colours. The Goal Umpires look very professional. I?m particularly excited that more female Goal Umpires have been added to the panel. I can still remember the huge roar that Chelsea received when she came out to umpire the 2012 Grand Final.

Some more female Goal Umpires would be great. Maybe a female field umpire would be good as well.

My point is more about the gripe some people have with umpires, but in guessing most would feel they're the lesser of two evils compared to video review.

A favourite moment from years ago, when I was first becoming seriously acquainted with AFL, occurred at the SCG when a contingent of Navy trainees, I think from Nowra, sat together in the crowd at the Randwick end wearing lab coats and copied the goal umpire's actions en masse. It looked hilarious and wonderful, but Mr Football (Ted Whitten) took a dim view, especially as the Vic team was going under.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

I would argue the white coats look far more professional than the fluro dribble they wear these days.

But I'm all for more female umpires more generally - including the potential to see female field umpires as well.

They are probably the same guys who now dress up as a group of Richie Benauds, complete with microphones, for one day of each SCG cricket test!
