It is disgusting and cheating by the AFL. They are such idiots because things like this will send semi interested AFL fans in NSW away from the game. I am so angry at the AFL and would love the swans to challenge in court. Big Cat is correct we can have anyone so long as we recruit them within the rules. Do these idiots not realise that Buddy was never going to GWS? I cannot believe that a sporting body can do this and say that as the reason. What an imbecile and Eddie's puppet Gillon is.

And as far as a rivalry with GWS - they are dreaming. It is an insignificant team that I couldn't care less about. I will never attend any GWS game not even the game against the swans as I wouldnt want to give them any of my money.

If 22 of the best AFL footballers decided they were going to each play for $250,000 and form a super club, then the AFL is powerless to stop then if they are free agents.

A club can have everyone. It depends in the contractual terms.

          A rivalry will start.
Saying that it won't only fuels the fire
And I look forward to it. Great for the Swans.

A rivalry should not be manufactured by wrongly punishing one team by attempting to weaken them to bring them down to the standard of the other team. The AFL are behaving like a bunch of children who had their favourite toy (ie Buddy) stolen from them. Buddy chose the swans, Tippet chose the swans, the swans disposed of some excellent players to accommodate them and they get punished. Hawthorn, Geelong, Collingwood have all had access to whomever they want when they want and Geelong and Hawthorn in particular have been more successful than the swans. Why is it ok for other clubs to be successful and take as many father son picks etc as they like but not the swans. So the AFL want the swans to be successful but not too succesful and not at the expense of their GWS team. It is blatent cheating by the AFL, twisting the rules to suit themselves.

Of course we can't have everyone. That what the god damn salary cap is for.

Can I just ask that any Swans fans that have GWS memberships consider cancelling next year, because it is clear that the AFL will hurt our club in favour of propping up this white elephant.

I would never take membership of another club and I agree with you it is all about favouring GWS. Poor sooky sooky lala AFL had Buddy taken from them so they had to retaliate.

Did anyone bother asking Buddy whether he wanted to play for the Giants? Had he been all about to sign for them, only for the big bad Swans to gazump the Giants with a financial offer Buddy couldn't refuse, I could see there might be some noses out of joint at AFL House. But this is so evidently NOT what happened.

There is every chance he might have stayed with Hawthorn had the Swans not been able to find a way to accommodate him. Ablett might like the challenge of leading a young club, but Buddy is a different kind of personality, and he strikes me as someone who likes winning.

I agree with you Liz, what evidence is there that the swans actually stole Buddy from GWS? In any case any player can go anywhere until the contract is signed. It is just so ridiculous I cannot get my head around it. If the swans are being punished for attracting too many good players then why aren't the other clubs, and if they are being punished for attracting Buddy then the AFL is seriously doing the wrong thing.

One of these men is the face of their organisation and leads with clarity of thinking, integrity, class, courage and honour. The other is Gillon McLachlan.

McLachlan: "You (Swans) can't have everything."

'You can't have everything', McLachlan says Swans should accept trade ban - AFL.com.au

WTF? Can't have law-abiding talented recruiters?

Where are the 'journalists' asking questions that require real answers?

I note that there is no actual explanation. Just "you can't everything (unless you're from Victoria)."

Hey Collingwood, you can't have everything, except for:
                            - $$$ Anzac Day match every year
                            - $$$ Queen's birthday match every year
                            - $$$ Palatial Westpac centre
                            - 14 games on the MCG
                            - Bare minimum travel
                            - Avoidance of power teams like Geelong on their home ground
                            - Blanket media coverage if a player is offended by a blade of grass (Lamumba)
                            - Your president can formulate policies to disadvantage rival teams

But other than that, Collingwood, you can't have everything.

Remember McGuire said that teams need to be of certain standard to play feature matches and time-slots? I wonder if that applies to Collingwood as they crash to the bottom of the ladder.
"Take me down to the Paradise City where the grass is green and the Swans win pretty."

"You can't have everything" (or everyone, as the case may be) is just a throw away line without substance. What is this everything that the Swans have that other clubs don't? How can the AFL CEO make such a statement without further clarification? It once again implies that the Swans are cheating and/or have special privileges. Is it the academy? Is it Buddy?

I apologise to those not familiar with Kafka, but it is so much like Joseph K in the The Trial: Whatever he's done, it is very serious, although no one can tell him what it is.
