Round 18, Swans v Hawthorn
The 12 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Hawks.
In an ominent sign the Hawks open the scoring with Roughead kicking truly within the opening minute of the game. Although it is goal for goal
for the first quarter with the Hawks taking a slim lead after kicking more behinds. Again they hit the scoreboard early but then the swans get a
run on with 3 goals in a row thanks to Tippett and Franklin to take back the lead before the Hawks kick a late goal to steady. Swans by 7 points
at half time.
Goodes then stamped his authority on the game with 2 goals in a matter of minutes, but they couldn't increase the lead much except by behinds,
before the momentum changed and the Hawks banged on 4 goals to take back the lead. The swans hung on for a period, before the Hawks opened them
up with 5 goals on the trot to put the game almost out of reach. In the end the swans could only reduce the deficit not overcome it with Goodes
and McGlynn doing their bit.

Sydney Swans 11.13 (79) def. Essendon 8.9 (57)
The Sydney Swans led at every change to defeat Essendon by 22 points on a cold, windy Friday night at the SCG to maintain their top position on the AFL ladder. Tim Membrey replaced Lance Franklin, who was a late withdrawal with knee soreness, to make his debut in what would prove to be his only senior match in a two-year contract with the Swans.
The Swans dominated the opening, kicking five goals to one with the wind in the first term. Despite the difficulty of scoring at the Paddington end, the Swans extended their advantage to 28 points at half-time. Adam Goodes was particularly dangerous including one goal from a cheeky play-on and side step that left Michael Hurley floundering. Essendon closed to within 10 points in the third quarter but the Swans responded through Kurt Tippett and a brilliant snap from an impossibly tight angle by Ben McGlynn.
Luke Parker (with a career-best 35 possessions), Mike Pyke (with 48 hit-outs) and McGlynn were all excellent, with Goodes, Tippett and McGlynn each kicking two goals.
