That's just gross revenue. A lot of these clubs with higher revenue have higher costs from running their social clubs, in order to support the extra revenue streams. In net terms they're not really much better off just because they have higher revenue. They have more assets but I'm not sure that's super helpful.

I had a look online and could not find any financial statements on the Swans organisation. It would be interesting to have a read of those statements. Do they release those statements at the AGM for members in February each year?

This is straight from the afl.com.au story;"Sydney Swans Limited today announced a profit of $846,871 for the 2014 financial year.

It is the Club?s fourth successive profit and was achieved with revenue growth of just under nine per cent to $46.5m."
So there you go.....it takes a @@@@load of money to run an AFL club!

The bigfooty thread I posted above had last year's annual report numbers but the guy had to acquire the report directly from ASIC.

My favourite stat in the graph is unknown.

Port are killing it in the unknown.

We need more unknown at the Swans.

It's from last years figures, but Collingwood posted a profit of $16,000,000 to the Swans $600,000.

We want to be the super club of the competition. We need to lift our profitability as well as lift our on-field performance.

Buddy has been absent from the front pages of the Telegraph this off-season. Are the Swans creating enough buzz? Are we gong to grow our membership numbers and grow our profitability without some front page buzz?

A big chunk of the Pies revenue was a one off grant of some kind apparently. They won't post 16m again.

20,000 paid up members is a good number for this time of the year. We had 40k last year, and I think VIC-based supporters make up around a quarter of our membership base. So should that percentage stay the same, having around 30k paid up Members with match day attendance would be a good place to be until they renovate the other stands at the SCG.

It also allows us to maintain initiatives like the Academy without other clubs complaining about us having our hands out at the same time.

Not really. Surplus cash allows us to invest in the future. Headline profit is an accounting construct only - you have to look beyond to understand what is really going on.

Exactly Liz. Profit is an accounting definition. Too many people confuse profit with money in the bank. That is not the case. Many examples of businesses going broke after recording profits

That would be confusing profit with cash flow, Doc.

"Cash flow" - isn't that an evocative phrase? I soothe myself to sleep at night murmuring "cash flow" as I drift off.
