I took a trip out to the Lakeside Oval to have a look at the boys train. Ended up chatting with another avid Swans fan, Bruce, who had also come out to have a look at the early morning gallop. As we looked at the boys doing some competitive drills we were joined by Peter Berbakov. What a lovely bloke.
There was a 3k time trial to start the New Year. You wouldn't guess who won. Would you? Jack Hiscox of course. Dan Hannaberry came in second and wasn't that far behind, well done Dan. But the surprise for me was one of the elder statesmen, leading by example this time, came in third, Macca! Really pleased for him. He passed us on the way to the starting line and had a chat, lovely bloke too. He was followed by Dane Rampe not far behind. A group of others including Dan Robinson & Jake Lloyd were next.
The drills were a lot less messy than I remember from last year and 2012. The kicking is a bit better but they were only going half pace really. The Big blokes, Buddy & Tip, both look great and Bud was hitting the ball hard on the lead and easily taking overhead, without the problems or pain.
Speaking to Peter was very interesting. The boys are really stung by the GF performance and are extremely keen to make amends. The pain of the loss was felt not just by the seniors but by every player and official. To fall so short as a couple of points in the Twos really stung too, it added insult to injury. It seems the club is very pleased with Dan Robinson, evidenced by promoting him from the Rookie List. Isaac Heeney is seen as being ready or almost ready for senior footy. His body is perfect and very developed for a 19 YO. He has the Vossy build, a Y.
A couple of players trained in both defensive and offensive roles but not Sammy or Abe Davis. Both were tried as forwards. Deano Towers did a bit of both. Kizza looked good and seems to be over the shoulder injury. Young Newman is still on crutches. Goodsie and a few others including Rose were on lighter programs. Apparently young Georgie Hewett didn't come back in tip top shape and they are working him hard. He will have to stop being a lazy sod sooner or later. But the fitness guys will work his butt off until he is at optimum fitness before the season starts.
Aliir is out there and going well. Same with Xav Richards. Lewis Melican seems to be able to find the ball. The girls and some of the boys are going to love this one, tall, dark (black hair) & handsome. In all the session wasn't that long, about an hour to hour & half. I suppose a 3k is enough to sap the energy any day. Look forward to others who go out to have a gander adding to this blog.
