Alex Rance & Dustin Martin Contracts

Alex Rance and Dustin Martin are both out of contract. Rance differs to Martin in that he is a Western Australian. There is a precedent in the family for his going back home. His father, Murray, played with Footscray but left to be an inaugural West Coast player and captained them in 1989. I believe Alex Rance will return to the West to play for the side his father captained in 2016. He was a great fan of Darren Glass and Glass' retirement leaves a huge gap in the west coast defence. Rance and McKenzie would be a lethal pairing and constitute the best KPP defence in the AFL. I don't think Richmond have a hope of stopping this one.

Dustin Martin has also put his contract on hold which tells me he is weighing up his options. If Richmond are not true contenders this year I think Dusty will look for a side that is a contender. He wants desperately to play in a premiership apparently. Some may say all players reach for this almost unattainable goal but that isn't really true. Many players are just happy to be getting games let alone winning a premiership. They are realistic enough to know only the few ever reach that height. But not so Dusty apparently. He wants desperately to win a premiership before retiring.

So refreshing to read a good solid footy post!

Dusty put talks on hold last time only to re-sign with his tail between his legs (correct me if I'm wrong). Wolfy, do you think Swans might make a play for him?

Didn't he go and speak to GWS but then changed his mind? I seem to recall the media following him up there.

If he came to Sydney there would be a ruckus (not a football kind) and Eddie might pass away with apoplexy. I don't think I want him although he can be an outstanding player on his day; I'm not convinced he'd have the application and the nous to knuckle down.

Quite apart from what it might do to our salary cap.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

We can't afford anyone of worth (thanks AFL) in this years draft (certainly not the likes of Rance or Martin) although we might find a jewel on less money as we seem to have a knack for doing that.

I think I heard he was in Sydney during contract talk time and apparently GWS withdrew after meeting him? Or maybe hearing more of his demands.
