Wayne Carey?s psychiatrist has spoken out about media reports that Carey?s brother assaulted the player?s former teammate Mick Martyn, claiming that Carey has no brother.
Dr Gunther Freudianslip says he has been treating Carey for a number of years for split personality syndrome, and that Carey?s brother is, in fact, a figment of the Crow forward?s imagination.
?Even the name is a giveaway,? Dr Freudianslip told thebladder.com. ?This so-called brother, Dick, is an obvious work of the imagination. But really this is an alter-ego, and excuse for Wayne to do what he wants. Essentially, he becomes this Dick.?
Dr Freudianslip said the assault on Martyn was simply the latest in a long line of incidents involving Carey and Dick. He said recent stories of Carey?s spa bath scandal, as well as the infamous bathroom liaison with the wife of former teammate Anthony Stevens, were all attributed by Carey to ?Dick?.
?It is much like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, where Wayne sometimes lets Dick take over. Sometimes it?s as if Wayne has no control and must do whatever Dick wants. During these times, Wayne transforms and begins to think like Dick and act like Dick.?
Dr Freudianslip said he had been working through the problem with Carey, saying they had made progress. ?Wayne has accepted that he has a problem, and he no longer speaks about Dick as if it is a real person. Sometimes he seems to refer to Dick as if it were a child, and that he has ownership of it. He often uses possessive phrases like ?thinking with my Dick?, while on other occasions he will say he was ?a bit of a Dickhead.??
Dr Freudianslip said Carey may never be completely cured, but hoped he would one day, at the very least, stop acting like Dick in public
