    "Swans Statistical Stories": February

Last month of the off-season, last instalment of my "statistical stories." Thanks for reading. This month: "Swans versus the rest", a collection of comparisons of various kinds.

As ever the full gory nerdy details are available here. Here's a summary.

    1. Versus teams - win/loss
From 1982 onwards. Still unbeaten versus Gold Coast Could do better versus Hawks, Cats and Crows.

    2. Versus venues - win/loss
From 1982 onwards. Gives some weight to the suggestion that they struggle at the MCG.

    3. Versus teams - members
Getting accurate membership numbers is a difficult business; I started here then made some manual corrections. Clubs also change how they count members from year to year (like when Collingwood included 3-game members, explaining the surge around 2010). Anyway, here it is and I think you can say the Swans are tracking OK.

    4. Club payments
I've posted this before; it's taken from the AFL 2013 annual report and shows payments to clubs sorted by "other" which includes prize money, signage rights and promotional funding. I am no expert in club finances. However, at rank 7/18 for "other" and in the lower 50% for total payments, I think we can say that anyone who believes that the AFL just throw endless cash to the Swans in particular is mistaken.

    5. Coaches
Just one more, because limit of 5 images per post Here's a timeline of coaches from 1909 onwards, showing their wins and losses each season. Works better as a large PDF, but click on it for a larger version.

This can be coloured in lots of ways (see the original for examples). This one shows who got us to a Grand Final. It inspired me to read more about Jack Bisset.
